Hi. Does anyone here ever see characters in tv, movie or books and feel like they are probably autistic? I do this a lot. Just curious to know if anyone else does this. One character I always feel is autistic is Newt Scamander from Fantastic Beasts (Harry Potter). I see so much of myself in him, quiet/socially awkward, he has difficulty understanding and communicating with people, prefers animals to people, eccentric, loves his special interest, obsessive, notices the littlest things others often miss......and he's eccentric. I don't think he's written as autistic, I've never read he was, but I see so much autism in him. And I do with other characters as well.
Surprised no one's mentioned both Temperance Brennan and Zack Addy from the series Bones, both are certainly meant to portray some form of neurodivergent thinking and approaches to socialisation.
I actually assumed that was just an acknowledged fact, and only just now when I was checking found out it's not ever directly mentioned on the show (apparently having a main character who exhibits lots of standard autistic traits is fine, but if you actually say they're autistic it hurts the show's appeal to networks or audiences)
Yup, but also fairly realistic that most people don't talk about their mental state
