New member seeking advice

Hello

I am in the process of completing self referral forms for asd assessment (in Wales if that makes any difference).

How much information/detail should I give for each question? The boxes are quite small... I am not really sure at all what to write apart from simple, short answers.

Thanks for any help.

  • Hi, I did the same as Jay recommended, a ‘word’ document is easier. I found it was valuable to add to it  when I thought of things. I don’t know about Wales but some NHS trusts are not accepting self referrals. It might be better to speak to your GP and get a referral, some counties are not accepting new referrals at all because of a backlog. Not trying to cast doom on your application, it does carry more weight with a referral. Hope you get on okay.

  • If I sat down in one go to complete that I might struggle.  However, I have started a word document on my laptop,  I added the main areas that would suggest possible autism (Social communication and interactions, etc.) and I just keep adding to it as things come into my head at random times.

I think either way is fine, going in with loads of stuff or just one word answers that can be expanded on when you are asked.  I guess the main thing to do is to be able to articulate the areas that cause you trouble and why (easier said then done often).

For context, I'm not diagnosed and have a few counselling sessions soon where I'm going to 'present my case' for why I should be referred for a formal assessment, whatever the outcome of that may be.

  • That should be fine, I think. I guess we would've been requested to provide extensive answers if that was felt necessary.

  • Thank you. I have so far answered the questions with one word answers (yes/no) or by writing things like "I have trouble making and maintaining friendships" but no more than that.

  • I likely had the very same forms. My advice is not to worry too much about your answers - even when I literally, totally misunderstood the questions I was later told that this was actually helpful and revealing.

  • If you need to expand, just use another piece of paper, and clearly reference what question your answer refers too.
