Fan

I just figured out today that having a fan rattling away in the room is very soothing. Only took me 58 years to discover that. I would imagine it's fairly expensive to have an electric fan on all year round though. I am a big fan of lamb bhuna and I understand that eating hot spicy food is a good way to keep cool in this freakishly warm weather.

  • I like windows open at night, with mosquito screens on them. But this is a noisy place, and I sometimes have to close them. The running costs of a fan are very low compared to aircon. I hate the sound of aircon, and it really makes an extremely unhealthy environment to sleep in. I further reduce the cost of fan by using one with a timer, that switches the machine off at a set time from say 5 minutes to 1 hour. ( I also have a low wattage 12 Volt fan, run on a deep-cycle battery that is recharged by a solar panel during the day; but the battery should obviously not be in the room, which complicates things a bit.)

I'm also in a place that prides itself on its spicy food, and I can actually eat spicier food than most here. I have been told by a doctor that it is now believed that chilli might have a role to play in inhibiting Deep Vein Thrombosis, and there is some ongoing research into that. My experience is that spicy food definitely helps to keep one's spirits up. (Some sort of endorphin thing, apparently.) Also, there seems to be very little proof that spicy food causes digestive problems; even for those who relish very spicy food.

  • My continued fan use in this cooler weather has my family puzzled. In a couple of months I will be expected to put the fan back in its box in the garage. This year it won't be going back in its box in the garage. I suppose I should eventually give them some kind of explanation. Not sure why that irritates me but it does.

  • Some things can be surprisingly expensive to run - if you leave a desktop pc running it's over £100 per year on its own - filament bulbs running every night can be £50 per year each - it all adds up!    Those black rectangular security/floodlights are often 500W each - and people have 2 or 3 of them running - 1500W - that's almost like a kettle running all the time in the night!

  • I noticed this and had to respond.

I use a fan every night of the year, last week when it was stupidly hot I had 2 one at the end of the bed and one at the side of me, I slept like a baby, funnily enough like you said the noise is really soothing for me as well I don't think it would be that expensive to use one as it's not a heating appliance.

I also have the window open most of the year.

  • Thinking about it I've always had a radio or television on instead so I would imagine the cost of a fan would be similar. Worth every penny if it lowers my stress levels anyway.  Slight smile

  • That's very helpful Plastic. Thanks.  Slight smile

  • We have them at work and I think I should have some at home now. I'm very hot! But I love the peace once they're turned off.

  • If you look at the Watts rating of the fan, at current electric pricing, Watts = £/year if running 24/7.

For example, a 20 Watt fan will cost you about £20 per year.

  • I have slept to the sound of a fan since i was young, even in the depths of winter! These days I use a white noise app on my phone, can’t sleep without it :)
