Fan

I just figured out today that having a fan rattling away in the room is very soothing. Only took me 58 years to discover that. I would imagine it's fairly expensive to have an electric fan on all year round though. I am a big fan of lamb bhuna and I understand that eating hot spicy food is a good way to keep cool in this freakishly warm weather.

  • I like windows open at night, with mosquito screens on them. But this is a noisy place, and I sometimes have to close them. The running costs of a fan are very low compared to aircon. I hate the sound of aircon, and it really makes an extremely unhealthy environment to sleep in. I further reduce the cost of fan by using one with a timer, that switches the machine off at a set time from say 5 minutes to 1 hour. ( I also have a low wattage 12 Volt fan, run on a deep-cycle battery that is recharged by a solar panel during the day; but the battery should obviously not be in the room, which complicates things a bit.)

I'm also in a place that prides itself on its spicy food, and I can actually eat spicier food than most here. I have been told by a doctor that it is now believed that chilli might have a role to play in inhibiting Deep Vein Thrombosis, and there is some ongoing research into that. My experience is that spicy food definitely helps to keep one's spirits up. (Some sort of endorphin thing, apparently.) Also, there seems to be very little proof that spicy food causes digestive problems; even for those who relish very spicy food.
