The masters course I’m considering.

This is the course I’m considering doing. I think they only have 15 students. I’m going to attend the open day anyway and get more info,

Parents
  • They have a lot of experience teaching about autism.  So it sounds ok.

  • Yeah, it certainly sounds very interesting and I had a good experience with Sheffield Hallam University, the tutors really supported me while I was there and they had plenty of additional classes which they held for specific parts of university education as well, as well as good access to tutors, for anything really.

I’m just journaling about it now and I’m not rushing my decision but I’ve wanted to do a masters degree for a long time and this one sounds perfect. I particularly like research and critical evaluation and the course includes this.

I’m going to specialise my metaphysical counselling to work with autistic adults, children and their families but I also want to be in a position to influence policy making and improve the lives of all individuals with autism.

  • I first went there in 1981, when it was still a polytechnic.  The city and the university has improved a lot since then.  When  the whole place was informally called the socialist republic of South Yorkshire.

Now they have lots of new buildings and better facilities.

I still look back on the good old days.  The place may have been a dump in the 1980s.  But it was very friendly.

  • WoW I didn’t know that. Thank you, the link will be very useful. It was the funding I was concerned about.  That’s brilliant. Thank you.

  • This link might be of use to you to then. The gov now provide students loans of up to £25,000 a year for PhD level study

  • That’s brilliant about SHU, I’ll be applying for DSA support as well. No I didn’t know that about the PHD, that’s definitely my goal. I’ll look into it further because that’s my overal intention. Thank you.

  • If you'd like to go further, did you know many PHD routes only require a degree? They also have the option to leave with masters if you decide you don't want to complete the whole course.

It looks like SHU are going to be leading the way with ASD support. They've just employed three members of staff whose roles focus on supporting students with autism, even if a student hasn't applied for DSA support.

  • I’m also looking to getting the doctorate as well but need to get the masters first. At the minute, I’m the one that would need peer support, that would be really helpful. Thanks for the info.

  • I've looked at that course too! I think I'm leaning more to getting my doctorate now though. As a someone whose newly diagnosed I'm looking forward to getting an Autism Mentor through the DSA.

If you're interested SHU are starting a peer mentoring scheme for students with ASD from the 18/19 academic year. You'd be able to support a less experienced student with the transition to student life

  • Blooming heck, that was an experience and a half! Yes, I don’t live far and did live in Sheffield for a few years. I didn’t really make the most of my time there as I was struggling to process stuff etc, but it would be nice to go back there and spend some time as the real me and enjoy the parks etc. I love the showroom cinema and lots of people go there by themselves and often there’s only a few people in the room so it’s not so intimidating. I’d like to venture to some of the eating places and maybe the quieter bars or whatever. I might also be starting Morris dancing though soon and I’d really like to join a class to learn French, so maybe no time for bars or whatever. Which is ok.
