072 101 108 108 111 032 087 111 114 108 100... with Optional 032 or 046.

There seems to be no other Thread (upon NAS) discussing this as a Topic, or Hobby, or its fancies... despite everyone who can read this actually doing it or using it.

  • 31-12-2017...3.

Still thanking VERY much, all who Post upon this Thread. Those not understanding (yet using what they do not understand anyway (072 101 101 072 101 101)) are also very much appreciated... this is from my Aspergers Point-Of-View... I am learning much about society without having to be accosted by it...

This -last?- is to say that all of this is as if reading a "live" copy of something like Linux Format to myself. And to say to DongFeng5, that you have a lot more patience than I could ever have. And... as I am typing this, it shows that LoneWarrior is typing a reply, and I give as much goodwill to LoneWarrior as to all... yet, as I see that, I get nervous and forget what else I was about to type here!!!!!! And that is one of my very greatest troubles!

  • Hello DC thank you for starting this thread,,, as I say I have only recently discovered this ascii text,

I wanted to wish you a happy new year and hope your new year will be a pleasant one,,, having watched since you first took the brave step to post on here I have had many a nice chat with you,,,, I enjoy your company and enjoy your ability to question things you do not quite understand,,, I question anything I don’t understand,,, long may our friendship continue,,, you have grown in confidence over time,,,, I have learnt from knowing you,,,,take care and keep just being you....x()

  • 31-12-2017 ...2

I began this Thread out of feeling a... well, "strange" connection. And, as I said, the Other Thread was becoming very long, and frustrating (to find the exact parts of). Surely I cannot thank those who have supported this Tread enough... (I filled a niche, maybe)... yet, this Post may disappoint a little bit.

I am, as if stuck in the 1980s. That is how I recognised ASCII and can grasp the concept of Hexadecimal, Octal, and can recognise a program in C. I, at school, was as if the star of "Computer Science" classes... just like "Art", "Gardening" and "English"... but then, here is where my UserName kicks in...

I wrote a little piece explaining this upon the AUTISTIC PEOPLE ON THE (NAS) INTERNET THREAD... but, the thing is... I cannot keep up with it! Society does not permit me, yet I understand it somewhat. I have some 15 books about Programming in C ( including C+, C++ and C#) and intended to learn Python... but then I am as if not allowed to do anything much at all...

...Oh, bother. This Post is long, now and so I would do best to end it. But I mean what I say, of course.

  • Very Glad Tidings to all. Yes, I am "Online" just now... until the New Year Fireworks begin...

I am going to (try to) Post a few things, here, and separate them as they are about different aspects of this same Topic...

    31-12-2017... 1.

DeepThought and LoneWarrior spotted that I had written  !  as 032 instead of as 033... This is correct, totally. Upon my own handwritten notes (yes, handwritten!) I had made that mistake... yet only upon the morning after, did I spot it, and then I dare not correct it, for fear of erasing all of the replies thus far given. This (first) Post is to bring an attention to that... if everyone is alright, I shall change it later (32 changed to 33). But I shall not change it until, perhaps mid-January, because I expect this site to be VERY busy with "seeing in the New Year".

I am SO very glad that I spelt "Hello World" correctly, at least...!

  • If you are sitting in front of a UNIX (or modern Mac) machine, you can get these results from:

echo -n "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" | od -t d1

echo -n "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" | od -t x1

  • As you wish.

THE QUICK BROWN FOX JUMPS OVER THE LAZY DOG

  • 072 101 108 108 111 032 087 111 114 108 100 with optional 032 or 046

    ..H....e.....l......l.....o...     ...W....o.....r......l.....d.........................     ../..   .

Should after 072 101 108 108 111 032 087 111 114 108 100 it not be optional to have 033! (exclamation mark), rather than 032         (space). This is the second time I have seen 032 used at the end of a sentence, and am not sure what purpose it serves if it is not a numerical typing error, being that I have only just been introduced to writing in ASCII (American Standard Code Information Interchange) by Lonewarrior and Elephantintheroom, and I really enjoy it as a word puzzle.

I mean it is just so satisfying in that for years using numbers has been a fundamental difficulty due to Dyslexia and Dyscalculia, and it is so fulfilling at last to actually have a functional relationship with numbers that actually works and makes sense to me ~ in at least the number to written form.

Would perhaps someone who can write in ASCII post the 'THE QUICK BROWN FOX JUMPS OVER THE LAZY DOG' and a line below which 'the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog' in code please?

This might sound strange but I will fully appreciate getting to work these out too.

  • Happy New Year to you too, , and indeed to everyone else.

Hopefully my contributions have been received in the spirit I intended. I aim not to patronise, but merely assist those who are interested or curious, to the limited extent that I am able. The number one rule is of course, "there is no magic".

I do get satisfaction from helping to point someone in the right direction, then seeing what they go on to achieve themselves.

If I have done a lousy job of trying to explain something, please do feel free to ask.

Software does strike me as a pretty obvious potential career for those of us who are fortunate enough to be HFA. If you like working with logic puzzles, something like Python is pretty approachable, and marketable in terms of employment opportunities. Python is not just for Raspberry Pi boards - it is also used in avenues as diverse as https://www.python.org/about/success/#government.

UK software outfits are unable to currently meet their demands from within the UK workforce, and with the current political climate, it may be more difficult to recruit from the EU nations...

    All the best in 2018.

  • OK, fair enough. You can take that egg out your mouth now, then. Flushed

Apart from the inconsistencies between the desktop and mobile versions of the forums (no "Tools | Restore lost content" on the mobile version), I admit I am seeing posts disappear, then reappear later.

It feels (i.e. the merest of hunches, no proof whatsoever...) like maybe the forums are being run on top of a NoSQL back-end (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NoSQL).

I don't have personal experience of such systems, but I note with horror the following from the aforementioned link:

"Many NoSQL stores compromise consistency (in the sense of the CAP theorem) in favor of availability, partition tolerance, and speed"

    and:

"Instead, most NoSQL databases offer a concept of "eventual consistency" in which database changes are propagated to all nodes "eventually" (typically within milliseconds) so queries for data might not return updated data immediately or might result in reading data that is not accurate, a problem known as stale reads.[11] Additionally, some NoSQL systems may exhibit lost writes and other forms of data loss.[12]"

Personally, I'd have thought that consistent data was paramount for forums provided for individuals who are challenged by unexpected change, and really need things to work in a reliable and predictable way...

(if posts I know I typed go missing, my first thought, given the evident "More | report as abusive" option, is that I have inadvertently managed to offend someone...)

Of course, I could be completely wrong here. The forum platform might simply be riddled. ;)

  • Very VERY Glad Tidings to all....

What I Post there, I leave there, and I dare not edit it. I just now typed in a proper, longer Post, yet was logged out and unable to copy or save it. The Link there is back to Mr.DongFeng5, and was the one main reason for myself beginning this Thread... Yet now I see what everyone discusses about this Forum being "glitchy".

This is, so far, a short Thread. And the Link is to a part of a very long Thread. Yet... both Threads (that one and this one) are "glitchy"...? Bad, bad, very bad...

Despite that... Happy New Years to all who may read...!

  • Computers can't really work with letters in the way we do. Instead, everything is numbers - long strings of zeroes and ones.

To be able to interact with computers using letters, systems of glyphs (think: hieroglyphics) were developed. In the western world the current "lowest common denominator" system of glyphs is still ASCII, but there have been others, such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EBCDIC. Unicode is replacing ASCII in many applications this century, because representing languages other than English quickly becomes problematic if all you have are 127 or 255 different glyphs to use.

So how do these glyphs really work? Put simply, a grid of dots representing a picture, such as the capital letter 'A' is assigned a particular number code. The letter 'B' is assigned the next code, and so on.

Now, computers tend to have a little bit more trouble with decimal numbers than we do, because they don't have eight fingers and two thumbs. The computer's equivalent "convenient" system is based on a power of 2. This gives rise to the following numbering schemes:

    1. Decimal, used when outputting numbers for people to use. In reality, this is just the correct sequence of glyphs to represent a decimal number that people will recognise.
    2. Binary, the raw sets of zeroes and ones, but too awkward for people to use (see example below!)
    3. Octal, which is now rarely used, because it is again too troublesome to scale, and you can't even count up to 8 or 9 before you need an extra glyph.
    4. Hexadecimal, which gets you all the way to 15 before you need an extra glyph. This enables you to display four consecutive "binary digits", aka "bits" using a single hexadecimal glyph. The glyphs are 0..9A..F. If you use two consecutive hexadecimal glyphs, you can represent all numbers from 0..255, i.e. an 8-bit byte.

    Example:

    • ASCII glyphs: ABC
    • Decimal ASCII: 65 66 67
    • Binary ASCII: 01000001 01000010 01000011
    • Octal ASCII: 101 102 103
    • Hexadecimal ASCII: 0x41 0x42 0x43

So, if we want to create a file on disk containing "ABC", the sequence of numbers 65, 66, 67 are stored sequentially. If you ask a computer to read the file on disk and display the contents on the screen, the computer reads 65, 66, 67 and outputs the appropriate glyph for each number, so you see "ABC" on the screen.

If you work at this level for long enough(!), you learn that:

    'A' is decimal 65, hexadecimal 0x41

    'a' is hexadecimal 0x61

    '0'..'9' are 0x30..0x39

LF (line feed) is 0x0A (thanks to for correcting this).

    CR (carriage return) is 0x0D

    SPACE is 0x20

    . is 0x2E

  • It is one of the glitchier forum platforms I have used. And I've moderated and administered a couple. A bit clanky, to say the least, but it usually recovers quite clickly. ;-)

  • I am using an iPad tablet which is fairly new so I cannot blame it,therefore the site is rubbish it it ability to do what it promises

This could only be true if the software running on the iPad was perfect.

No software is perfect. Apple recently released a major update to its desktop operating systems with a glaring security hole which Should Not Have Happened (www.theregister.co.uk/.../). That recent event demonstrates quite well that just because something is new, it does not mean it is fit for purpose.

The issues being experienced by users of this forum may be related to the site, the particular device being used to access the forums, or perhaps an interaction between the two.

  • Argh was nearly finished my reply to spotty and it all vanished?

this site is becoming so unstable it is beyond belief, I am using an iPad tablet which is fairly new so I cannot blame it,therefore the site is rubbish it it ability to do what it promises.

Sorry spotty but just another glitch one of many on here.

I am really sorry to hear your OH is visiting hospital a lot....I am sorry I didn’t notice your presence sooner as I would have welcomed you back, There seems to be a lot of new members recently, not a problem if this site could actually cope, we get whole replies dissapering and  reappearing,

Missy has been busy if late over the holiday period, not coming in here often, I am sure if she was about she would listen! Maybe try to PM her? I had a message just the other day, quite late and quite short, but a message.

ellie has had a lot of guests over Christmas according to what she wrote on the Christmas shout out thread, she visits when she can. Again another opertunity to talk. If you need to talk then feel free to friend request me, I know I am not one of the girls perse but I have a good listening ear and a heart.

please just jump in on any thread, any kind of etiquette seems to have been forgotten, it bothers me not as we are all free beings with free minds, so long as no one is rude or causes harm then fine by me,

I would very much like to offer a hug from me ellie and missy, oh and BlueRay she is very nice too, an amazing lady, so ()()()()( xxxx.

take care and don’t be all alone, you are much loved here by many.

  • Hope you get back on piste a bit more soon. I just feel that machines frequently break down. Computers too, because currently they still require some human input. We all expect too much of each other really.  But by opining such a loser opjnion, one automatically opens oneself up to yet again being called clumsy. Some really do seem to think they are or should be continually perfect. That strikes me as a  very damaging outlook in the long-run. And *** most certainly does happen to them.

  • Thank you Lone. I am curious but my brain is spread very thin at the moment. Other half in hospital a lot. I am so lost and unhappy, it's been great to check back in here and read things I understand (apart from the code). Sorry if that's too off piste DC, I'm just very lost and not having been around I don't know where to join in. xx

  • Interesting. I also have similar issues, but perhaps a bit less than you. My father was good at numbers. My grandfather was a sort of engineer. I also like mechanical skills, despite my even more pronounced dyspraxia. To put it simply, I like fixing stuff, but I'm clumsy and ill-coordinated in body and mind. I also count in the mind and on the lips while doing tasks that seem to offer some relaxation and organisation. And that mental loading bay is so small that I frequently misplace the next number in the sequence. Then I either rip it up and start again or repeat the last number until the next is recalled. But none of this is really alarming. I'd argue that most people experience this at some time. I have even been complemented on my ability to calculate. The thought of the commentator was that most people would have walked to find a calculator. My response was that it it had all been done with very messy and long-winded written-down back-of-a-packet calcs.

  • Hi Senior Moment I like that,,,very true but within the context of this thread even more thought provoking.?????

  • Hi Senior Moment I do not cope well with numbers, I have limited working memory area,in-short a small loading/ unloading bay to put things on ready to store or load up for delivery.Dyslexic traits.

I am fascinated by series of numbers specifically even numbers?.

I count continually as a stress reliever,,,Well if I am stressed then I count,so white lines along short interchanges, how many tiles on an end gable of a roof, how many parallel wires on a heras fence panel. It helps my mind to stop focusing on whatever is causing me stress at the time, it does exhaust me mentally but I am compelled to do it.

My memory has little instant recall ability to remember say more than three or four sets of triple numerical  digits.

My father was an amazing mathematician,a good book keeper who had to write everything down x2. Two books one for the client and one for tax purposes! No don’t ask Lol. He added up long series of figures in his head only using a mechanical adding machine to create a till roll copy.
