What can help me feel less overwhelmed

So especially at night I struggle with any noise except my fan going. I find noise hard and painful. I find bright light hard. I keep chewing my finger nails. I don't know what can help with all of these things. It's frustrating and wish at times there was an easy fix. I'm new diagnosed I just don't know what can help me at times.

  • I wear a baseball cap when it's too bright.

There is lots of "teething jewelry" on Amazon designed for mums to wear for their babies to chew, but they're actially good for us too.

Sounds are harder.  If you've got the money, a good pair of noise reduction headphones. My partner has some electronic earbud ones that actually cancel noise but still enable you to hear speech.

  • I get this as well - insomnia really bites. It's good you have your fan, have you tried anything like soothing sounds like a whale? It's helpful for some people so might be worth a try.

I suffer from insomnia, and can find noises and bright lights distressing. Have you tried blackout blinds to block out outside lights? I've got those now and they're a big help.

It might be worth trying to get a chew toy so you don't bite your nails as much - I chew my hair way to much so have ordered a chew toy instead.

  • Hi. Welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear that you are feeling overwhelmed. I am just still finding my way with my diagnosis and it is not an easy one.

I too wish at times that there was an easy fix. I think it is great that you have found the a fan helps.

Noise and lights are difficult for me too. I don't chew my nails, but my daughter does.

I often have insomnia at the moment, so maybe see you again in the early hours!

  • Hello , a lot of the English people on this forum are probably still asleep and may have better advice for you - but my suggestion is to maybe focus on one thing first, and try to find something that will really help.  It may be improving your sleep - are you having sleep struggles?  If so improving your sleep would probably help with lots of things, as I find some of my issues are worse when I'm tired.
