Pretending

I have difficulty motivating myself to be my ‘best self’.

To deal with this I have to pretend that things are different.

For example, in order to motivate myself to work my best in working with someone I often imagine they are more important than I feel they are.  I promote them - in my imagination - to a world famous figure in history.  Then I feel the energy flow into my work as I have to work well for this celebrity.

Another example: Sometimes I address an email as if I’m writing to royalty in order to get myself to bother having a respectful tone.  Then I change to the real name before sending.

Is  related to autism or acting?

Does this count as a type of dishonesty?

  • I don't think it is dishonesty. I think it is more of a coping mechanism.

I don't imagine other people are different than they are but I do imagine I am. Sometimes I just imagine how I'd behave if I was a normal person and then I try and do it

    Not sure if that helps
