Hello - Parent of newly diagnosed teen with ASD

Apologies if I go on a bit here, its taken a while to get to here.

15yo DD was just diagnosed before Xmas16 with ASD - we are still waiting the report from the consultant so we do not know actual details of diagnosis - diagnosed well before xmas and yes, still waiting - don't start me on the state of the NHS. We know there is anxiety and depression so much so there has been threat to self over the past 12months including two spells in CAMHS hospital unit.

Now DD is out of hospital, but has not been able to return to full time education, DD struggling with day to day life, depression is at an all time low. We are keeping her safe and I believe that DD really doesnt want to end her life, but we are struggling to get her out of the depths of depression. We are stuggling to find her help or local support groups around us.

Today I tried to get DD to walk to the local shops to get DD out of the house and some fresh air but again DD would not get out of bed. We just can't seem to break the cycle. If anyone has any guidance, suggestions, anything we would much appreciate it.

I’m sorry your daughter is going through such a tough time, it’s good that you’ve let us know what’s happening/how they feel. Many people have similar thoughts when coping with so much and we hope they’re okay.

If at any point you believe that your daughter is unable to cope with the distress or despair, it’s very important to tell someone. Call your GP and make an urgent appointment. Your GP can make sure she gets the appropriate help and support.

If it’s outside your GP hours call 111 to reach the NHS 111 service:: http://www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/AboutNHSservices/Emergencyandurgentcareservices/Pages/NHS-111.aspx

The Samaritans also provide confidential non-judgemental emotional support, 24 hours a day on 116 123, or by email on jo@samaritans.org.

MIND have information pages on coping with self harm or suicidal feelings based on the experiences of people who’ve been through it that she may find helpful.

If she was ever very close to doing something to hurt herself - call 999 now or go to your nearest A&E department. There should be someone there to support her and make sure she gets ongoing support.

In terms of finding support for your daughter more generally, you can search for services in your area on the Autism Services Directory: www.autismdirectory.org.uk This includes services such as: support groups, social groups, advocacy, befriending, residential settings, outreach and respite.

You may also want to contact your local social services, if you are not already receiving help from them. Please take a look at the following articles for further information on getting help from Social Services:
