Awaiting referral

Hi, My little boy (aged 6) is currently awaiting a CAMHs referral regarding a probable autism diagnosis.

He has always shown signs but since before Christmas things have really escalated. Constant meltdowns in school, violent behaviour towards others and himself. He can currently only go into schools for the mornings as full days is just not possible. And even then last weel I was phoned at 9.50am one morning and 10.15 another morning to collect him.

An educational psychologist has observed him at school and says he shows signs of autism but we are waiting on CAMHs referral.

Can I ask how long has diagnosis taken for people? We're feeling really flat just now because bar us and the school noone is interested and my wee boy is suffering. School referred him to a Bernados support service? But they replied saying his case is too severe? So they won't offer anything.

I just want help for my boy and it feels like there isn't any.

  • It really does depend on where you are in the country regarding how long to wait for an assessment.

As far as a diagnosis is concerned, this often takes years for many. From trying to get someone to listen to me to a diagnosis for my daughters it was 7 years. We were pushed from pillar to post for years and when she did finally get an NHS assessment, they decided she didn’t have anything wrong with her. We had to go private, as her life was hellish. She was 17 when she got her diagnoses’s.

I don’t think it will take that long in your case. Boys often get seen and diagnosed quicker. I’m speaking generally….

  • Thanks for the reply!

7 years?! That's awful for you. I hope she is doing better now.

Can I ask did you tell her you thought she was autistic whilst you were waiting in formal diagnosis?

And I hope you don't mind me asking but does the private diagnosis get accepted in regards to support etc.? Just because I have read that even with a private diagnosis it sometimes isn't acknowledged!

Thanks for any help. New to this and trying to arm myself with as much knowledge as possible for my boy!
