Hello Everyone! Newly ASD - Nice to meet you all.

Hello everyone, nice to meet you all.

I am Ken - 47, from Leeds, U.K. looking forward to getting to know some of you.

I have just discovered I am ASD - not sure how I am coping with it.

  • Hi Lee, Nice to meet you.

Thanks for the advice... I seem to be covering old ground from the past, with a new perspective...having various lightbulb moments of when situations usually, workplace took a negative turn.Slight smile

  • Hi  Ken. Your Diagnosis is a journey my Friend. Enjoy getting to know yourself all over again :-)

  • Hi, some days you can feel like a super hero, other days you are the super villain. The biggest positive I found was that I’m not the only person in the world who thinks and acts like I do. I just thought that I was depressed, weird and finding everything more difficult than everyone else, they make life  look so easy.

  • Yeah it seems pretty cool so far...everyone is lovely. Thanks...yeah I will be floating around here a bit I think. I will probably need some Autism advice from you all at various points. lol.

  • I like it. I've not been here lately life got hectic but I'm hoping to be here more now. Look forward to seeing you around here ^-^

  • Hey Becky, Nice to meet you too.

Thanks for your kind words. I get a feeling this place is fun already. Slight smile

  • Hey I'm Becky... Nice to meet you Ken Grin

I found with my diagnosis things got better and made more sense to me over time. Hope you find this place as much fun as I do!

  • Hi Niblets, Lovely to meet you too. Thank you, I am glad I joined. Yeah, I figured there would be some mental adjustment to get used to...thanks. Slight smile

  • Hi Ken, lovely to meet you. Welcome to the group. It can take a while to get used to after the diagnosis but don't worry you'll get there :-) I hope you enjoy yourself here.

  • Hi Coffee, Thanks... It is being pretty helpful so far...with the welcoming messages help.

I am glad you are making more sense of things... I think I am going through similar feelings about it at the moment too.

I am happy that it has been a positive experience for you for the most part. I do feel a relief...knowing I can put my " social quirks - for all of my life" down to something.

I get moments of cringe...when I remember how people have treated me badly in the work place for no appreant reason..of which I didn't understand why.

  • Hi Roy, nice to meet you too. I am not sure what the correct way to highlight your newly discovered superpower is...but congratulations that you have.

Yeah, it is a big shock to say the least... it is confusing...my mood fluctuates with how I feel about it.

  • Thanks Sparkle, Yeah...well, It might sound odd - but I knew from a very early age...I wasn't like all the other kids. I have mild dyslexia too..which I didn't discover until 38. When I realised...It all made sense... up to this point....I am now trying to come to terms with my life not knowing I had autism...and what am I going to do now...with it. Slight smile

  • Hi there. I hope that you find this place to be as helpful as I do.

I was diagnosed almost a year ago. There were many stages I went through, but feeling like I’m making more sense of things day by day. It’s been an altogether positive experience, but it has had the occasional down too.

  • Hi Ken, nice to meet you. I’m in my fifties and only found out I’m autistic in December. It’s a big shock isn’t it!

  • For me, the diagnosis brought a sense of relief because it hadn't come as a surprise (I'd done some prior research and had traits that seemed to fit). This was followed by panic and a feeling of, "Help! Where do I go from here?"

Just remember that you are still the same person that you were before your diagnosis (this is something I had read on this forum earlier today). Your diagnosis can be a great way of gaining a better understanding of yourself. Relaxed

  • Hello Sparkle,

Thanks...I appreciate your reply. I am sure all will become clear eventually Relieved

  • Hello there,

You are in good company here, as quite a few of us members have been diagnosed or self-diagnosed later in life.

There can be mixed feelings about an ASD diagnosis, irrespective of whether it's been anticipated or come as a complete surprise. You'll soon find that out once you've spent a bit of time here and read some of the posts. Wink
