Aspergers

Hello all, I have a 14 yr old son who has Aspergers. We've gone through the lot, diagnosis, CAMHS, medication, statements, exclusions and special schools. I still feel no closer to coping. Are there other parents like me struggling to cope, when even GP's turn their backs on you and his xbox is his only way in life!xx

I got lucky in that while I only just got diagnosed with Aspergers (at 22) my younger brother has Aspergers and my little sister has ASD. It kinda runs rampant in my family. I kinda feel bad for my Mum because I can't imagine we were easy to raise but she's managed and she did so pretty much on her own. Luckily there is a lot more out there for people with Autism/Aspergers and their families now so it's just a case of doing research. Like someone said above don't trust the problem to your GP because as the name suggests they dal with general health problems and you need someone who can deal with whatever you need specifically and who obviously is educated in the subject and has an interest.

she loves you and i doubt she would want you to feel bad about her life and your lives, i think its lovely that you show you love her too by saying that and acknowledging how hard it must be on her sometimes and i think thats all she will wantSmile

  • your welcome Smile and thanks Laughing i do ok

very true i totally agree with you there, actually autism and all disabilites/issues , so many people that have to do it on their own too, i wish they could all know how amazing they are

  • Hi there some one,

Thanks for your kind words. I also think you're pretty amazing having a partner with autism. Infact, anyone who copes with autism in whatever way is absolutely awesome!!

  • hey there indie girl, i cant imagine what its like in your position myself , i dont have kids and have always said i think its hard enough with an autistic partner so i dont know how id cope with kids, but i think if you have done 14 years, you are doing amazing

my advice, dont turn to gps because this isnt their field , thats why there are autistic specialists in the first place

you areprobably on the best place for support to be honest, ie here, where other people can relate and who understand what you are talking about and what its really like to live with it every day

you need 2 things, something to help him with his symptoms, and, soemthing to help YOU, and as an nt, this, talking, relating will help you quite a bit to be able to keep going

  • Hi Paul,

It's tough isn't it? It's a never ending search for help and giving up cannot be an option. How old is your child?

  • We are in your position as well! Best of luck :)

  • Thank you saint mick - what a saint!x

If you think your GP is turning their back on you, get in touch with the practice manager of your surgery and make a complaint as that should not be happening.

The best thing to do is find your local mental health crisis intervention team, who will visit you to see how they can help and provide you with some counselling for yourself, contact your regional health authority.
