Hello everyone

Hello everyone,

I thought I just like to say hi to everyone. I have a child who has been diagnosed with a number of ASD's. I am looking for advice and support and have decided that I am going to do my best to raise awareness of the autistic spectrum and the autistic spectrum disorders of which there are many.

Hopefully if we can raise awareness more people who do not have a family member or know someone with a family member who has an ASD we can be made aware and help us provide and get better support for those of us with a family member with an ASD.

  • Hi DJ Haribo,

I joined the community yesterday and have been looking through all the posts, so just thought I would say hi. I have an adult son with Aspergers, ADD and Dyspraxia. How old is your child?

  • CDD and Rett's are also not strictly part of the autistic spectrum - for similar reasons to those given by Hope, above, for why ADHD and Dyspraxia are not.

And, just for the record, I personally see 'condition' and 'disorder' as being fairly synonomous and equally un-offensive.

  • ADHD and dyspraxia are developmental conditions which may possibly be related to the ASCs, but are different because people with ADHD and dyspraxia do not have the Theory of Mind difficulties that people with a form of autism have. Therefore they cannot be said to be part of the Autistic Spectrum, and to  include them would not be scientific. However, many people with ASC have co-existing conditions, which are commonly ADHD, dyspraxia, and/or OCD etc.

I would also like to add that Autism etc are not disorders. Autism Spectrum Conditions is the  term that should be used nowadays to avoid offence.

  • Technically there are 3 main forms of ASD's although when speaking to medical professionals there are other conditions apart from the main 3 you mention. From research I have done the following are seen to form part of the autistic spectrum:

    1. Autism
    2. Asperger's syndrome
    3. Dyspraxia
    4. ADD / ADHD
    5. Pervasive development disorder - not specified (PDF-NOS)
    6. Childhood disintegrative disorder (CDD)
    7. Rett syndrome

I believe there may be some others from the people I have spoken to but I am going to do some more research and try and get more clarification from the medical proffession.

Thanks for the comment. Hopefully soon I'll get a better understanding of ASD's and my child's condition in particular.

  • Erm...

How does one have 'a number of ASDs'?

As I understand it, there are basically 3 ASDs: Asperger's, (Classic, or Kanner) Autism (which may be High-Functioning and Low-Functioning), and Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified.

And one either has one or another.

One can not have more than one.
