The bill has passed, now onto the HoL

THIS TREAD IS ABOUT THE ASSISTED DYING BILL.

I'm glad it's passed, I know any people will disagree, and I respect thier choice, as I can't take any pain killers except paracetamol, this bill gives me some comfort that when the end is in sight, I have some choices and hopefully won't have to depart before I'm ready.

  • with out i should note any kind of modderation notification on the system.

  • hmm all my posts in this thread appear to have disappeared (as of 24th june 2025)

  • Thanks  .

It’s tough when painkillers don’t agree with you.  I can tolerate most drugs for pain relief, at least for short periods of time following surgery, but I’ve spoken to quite a few patients (when I have been in hospital) who would say what you are saying.

  • Sorry to hear of your dog, it's always hard.

I'd like to hear more from anaethetists too, the last one I saw at the pain clinic told me the area of damage was to great for them to do any of thier injections. The one I saw that, when going for surgery recomended some fentanyl for post op, but now I can't take that either.

I'd like to hear from palliative care experts about what form of pain relief they can offer someone in my situation. they all say there's things that can be done, without ever telling us what? I realise that will vary from patient to patient, but to me it sounds as if they're making excuses for not supporting assisted dying.

  • Thank you Debbie. I am struggling but time will heal. This forum provides an intermittent respite.

  • My beloved dog had to be euthanised last week

    My condolences.

  • It is a terrible thing when a person is calling out in agony and it’s something that could happen to any of us.

  • The problem is that some people don't react as well to pain killers as others, they just don't seem to be as effective, I know for myself that I react very badly to opiates, they work for a day or two, then I start hallocinating and the effectiveness against pain drops markedly.

I would like the same options as my dogs and cats, I know I'm making the choice for them, but I've also seen very sick cats hold out thier paw and arm to the vet, with a 'lets get this over with' look.

I'm not a Christian, but I do have faith and assisted dying is within my faith.

  • I still have concerns about the level of protection from criminal interference that patients will have.

I would like to see more debate from doctors, including anaesthetists, about the drugs that will be used for assisted dying. I would like to know more of the arguments for using heavy sedation and an overdose of general anaesthetic to bring about a peaceful and painless death. I would have thought it would be possible to self administer the drugs by the patient pressing a button linked to an intravenous pump with timed dosage.

My beloved dog had to be euthanised last week and it has been a very distressing time for me. Heavy sedation followed by an overdose of general anaesthesia made his death very peaceful and quick. He was treated with dignity and I am very grateful that a peaceful and painless death was possible. People who wish to have a quick and painless death should have the same rights when they are suffering.

  • Well I believe in heaven and I know it’s real. If you don’t believe then fine I won’t convince you to but I will not be changing my views either. You view me as nuts and I’m wasting my fine see if I care. Clearly it’s let’s pick on me day. So much for boosting my confidence

  • I've experienced loved ones slowly die in degrading ways which include but are very much not limited to deep depression as a result of the illness and life changing outcomes.

I've been a carer and talked to carers.

I knew someone who cared for both her parents who couldn't do anything for themselves, including going to the toilet.

Who are we to say that their suffering isn't bad enough for them to choose to end it?

I'm experiencing right now a loved one suffering a life threatening and shortening illness with many months in hospital.

I will always defend their right to end their suffering when they choose and would help them in any way I can.

  • I was on a cancer ward today and a visitor was calling down the corridor to a nurse asking for more pain relief for the person they were visiting as they were 'in agony' (their words).

The nurse said they couldn't have any more at that time.

This is in the UK with advanced healthcare systems.

How much more do others suffer who are in poorer countries or war torn zones.

I think that stopping suffering should be a primary aim of humankind.

Others might vote against this because of their idea of a heaven, and believing that a person who ends their own suffering won't go to heaven (a mediaeval view) but in effect you are saying that your belief (and it's only a belief) is more important than alieviating another's very real agonies.

Thank goodness for Dignitas and other clinics like it.

  • In fairness that artical is pay walled but it appears to be talking about the american lethal injection. The asssted dying bill requiers self administation of the lethal agent which sugests oral route only for practical purposes. standard methiods generally involve barbitiuates which tend to knock people out before they kill them, they tend to 'die in their sleep.'

  • Aww I am so sorry to hear that! PIP were so rude to me as well and I’m getting pestered by the job centres to get a job. Also get told why should I be alive if I can’t focus or get a job? God gave us life just so little people see that. And although I don’t know yourself and your mum, tell her she’s not a bother at all. It’s just life, so many people out there just want to make it harder! I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks the way I do

  • Yep absolutely, it won't get your there and thats sad to take yourself out of the running. The alternative is not good and suffering will get worse not better.

I also feel like we are at risk. Also the elderly, my mom said to me that whenever she tries to get benefits or help for her or my dad she gets the impression she's too much hassle and they wish she'd just shuffle off the mortal coil and stop bothering them. I have felt the same applying for PIP.

  • Actually their methods cause painful muscle spasms and often take 47hrs to kills someone. Read Joel Zivor's article - 'Last rights : assisted suicide is neither painless nor dignified',The Spectator, 18 September 2021.

  • Completely agree with you there. I’m ashamed of the UK and being from here all the more now! I personally believe in heaven but I don’t believe assist dying will get you there. Not trying to cause an argument but I do feel likes of us are at risk now. Worried it will turn into Logan’s run soon enough

  • unfortunate. Because I harbeour no ill will towards you at all. But I stand by my position. I don't think it is a lack of compashhion not to want people to kill themselves because it's presented as an easy alternative in the face of medical neglect.

  • That's very sad. I am devasted that this bill passed and ashamed of this country  and ashemd to live here for it's agenda to try kill off all that are in their minds 'useless'.

Don't think that it will always be your choice or even your family's choice. The council and DWP already hate us people with illnesses or disabilities. It is not hard to imagine they could bump us off to save a little cash

  • I’m gonna be honest with you, after hearing about this all over the news this is really freaking me out and scaring me Sob it could just be a personal phobia of jabs and iv drips etc. but hearing it in the news all the time is just really upsetting me. Could be due to personal triggers as I’ve said though
