What do you do on a weekend?

As the title says, really.

I find that on a weekend I get up fairly early (5:15AM) as I don't like doing lie-ins. I'll then head to the gym at some point that morning and do a class or two, or perhaps just do a workout/swimming session and/or spend time in the spa. More often than not, I have absolutely nothing else planned for the weekend, meaning I have two long afternoons that drag out and I do nothing but procrastinate, making me feel unproductive and bringing my mood down.

I used to enjoy gaming and I do still occasionally, but not so much now, and it feels like such a waste of time when I do it. I'm trying to be more forgiving with myself, and right now I'm laid in bed watching Impractical Jokers, which I enjoy and don't feel so bad about doing, but it'd be nice to have some more things to fill my weekend with.

I'd like to know what everyone else gets up to on the weekend.

  • I mostly chill at home too, but sometimes I check https://retreatnearme.com/ to see if there’s anything quiet and relaxing nearby. Found a couple of small local places through it that weren’t crowded or overwhelming. One had gentle yoga and a walking trail, which helped me decompress without feeling pressured to talk to people much. It’s hit or miss, but nice to have the option.

  • I write computer code everyday including weekends, unless I don't feel well.

Weekends may be more for my own projects of coding, or learning something new.

  • Currently work unless I get a Sunday off in which case I generally chill

when my buisness is fully up and running I hope to spend weekend ends doing more fun stuff like ganes and days out but right now most days off are spent rehearsing or performing

  • Lately I’ve been playing my switch 2! Been playing the kart game and jamboree add on and can’t wait for the Kirby add on which comes out Thursday

  • See my children and their mum on Saturday morning. Try to go to church on Sunday morning and/or evening. Saturday afternoons/evenings are difficult because I'm inclined to try and socialise but always feel way out of my depth, so I just try to stay out for as long as possible before making the sad, lonely walk back to my rented room and preparing for sleep. As I don't work at present though, weekdays and weekends are just as futile.

  • Same. I stay home. At least then I get the kind of peace I need as I live alone, so my time is my own.

Since lock down I have gone back to writing and I enjoy quilting, so, I do that.

  • I usually stay home, play the same video game for hours, and eat snacks. Sometimes I draw or just listen to music on loop if my brain feels too busy.

  • I feel sometimes - I've wasted a weekend and feel guilty of taking time out to just sit relax, especially when I know there's so much I could be doing with my time; I haven't done any DIY on the house in years.

I just probably have to be a bit kinder to myself - to accept I need the downtime, and perhaps tick off some smaller (achievable jobs) I could do in a hour or two at the weekend - and worry less about things the big jobs, or simply break them down

  • Thank you very much for your response and advice!

  • This is great! Good on you for learning to drive, I found it a very scary process and it took me quite a while, but I got there in the end. I know it's not easy but if you could get yourself a manual car just simply getting in and practicing makes a huge difference.

For your test day, just keep yourself relaxed. Have a nice chat with your examiner and put yourself in the mindset that you're just nipping to the shop with them as opposed to being tested, and the atmosphere will really help settle you.

  • Yep, I absolutely understand the need to recharge, and that's often why I can't really do anything with my weekends otherwise I'm just completely drained.

  • Thanks for replying, nice to see this post pick up a bit of traffic all of a sudden. You're right about being kinder to yourself, and I think that's good advice no matter who you are. I remember a saying/quote - I can't remember who from - which states "time that you enjoyed wasting was not wasted time," and I think that's very true for the most part.

Your weekend does sound really good - what book were you reading?

  • Nice place and my favorite weather!

  • Views of Lindisfarne castle on Holy island,  the weather was variable.

  • The working week can be exhausting. I’m sorry you don’t get much peace during the weekend but am glad you at least get some time to yourself–self care is important but finding time to relax isn’t always easy. The weekend is my time to myself. My weekdays are always busy, especially of late as I have to manage everything going on by myself-it involves a lot of people coming to my home and meeting at the village hall-but despite my anxieties I’ve been enjoying the company as I’ve felt lonely of late.
My weekends are my solace. The routine is almost always the same and it’s almost always just me. Weekdays are busy-busy always on the go and constantly being pestered. Weekends are my time to relax.

  • I hate weekends really. There is no strict routine, that gives me comfort during the week, there is constant noise and chaos at home. it’s always that I try hard to have some time in the morning to myself only, but it’s usually impossible. During the week I wake up at 5:20, take my pill for hypothyroidism, then I have my half hour for pacing my kitchen with my favorite music on headphones, it’s quiet, everybody sleeps. I need this routine to have a balanced day, but on weekends it’s usually impossible so I’m imbalanced, the day starts not as it should. And this constant interruption whenever I try to do something. I hate weekends! The only good thing about them is that I have some more time for myself in the late evening if I have enough power to stay late. The problem with weeks is that the work during the weekdays exhausts me really.

  • I'm sorry you're not enjoying gaming as much anymore. I hope you can be kinder to yourself. Just remember-if something makes you happy and brings you enjoyment then it isn’t a waste of time.

My weekends ordinarily consist of me staying home. Since my mum sadly passed away it’s just me now. Weekends and the week are much the same for me.

I will usually spend my time:

    Reading something

    Playing with my toys

    Sorting through collectables

    Watching stuff

    Listening to music

Or spending time out in the garden or writing.

This weekend however was different–I journeyed and stayed on a riverboat from Friday to today. It was mostly quiet, not many had booked-(Good for me.), and it was  a peaceful time only disturbed a little by young children running around playing but luckily I had my noise cancelling headphones that helped limit the disturbances and I was able to read my book.

I got to see some exciting sights we passed and I saw some ducks, geese and swans. The weather remained dry, mostly. I had to return inside the boat to my room twice due to the rain, though I could still see the scenery pass by through my window.

It was a delightful time!-A change to my usual weekend routine but a good change.

  • I'm on Holy island now, a bit windy but nice place,  plenty of tourists.

  • generally recover from a week of work - so yesterday I just sat in my garden and did some reading whilst listening to Spotify. Evening is usually Netflix movie at the week - I save series for Mon-Fri

Today I've got some gardening and wash the car, but generally the weekend is needed to recharge and be ready to face the week ahead.

I so look forward to retiring - but another 10 years for me

  • Here goes...

    I always go walking

I tend to go cycling (during the warmer months)

I do my workout set, I've got some handweights that I use.

I read some of my book(s). I've tried to spend more time reading and less time on my computer.

    I cook some food

    I go food shopping

    I play Scrabble sometimes

Sometimes I watch a bit of telly (watching Andor at the moment, great show, I'm a big Star Wars fan).  Sometimes on E4 there's the Simpsons or The Big Bang Theory, or Modern Family, which I find quite funny.

Sometimes I build with my LEGO as well.

Sometimes I meet up with my friends and we go somewhere.

I do some housework as well, some cleaning, some chores.

My weekends are not always exciting, but they are most of the time a great way for me to unwind from work (I work about 36 hours over Monday to Friday, I go in 3 days a week, usually Mon, Tues, Thurs, so I am quite drained by Friday!).

Oh, and I usually have a 2-hour driving lesson as well, usually Sunday Morning but sometimes Saturday. I've been taking driving lessons since January 2024, made really good progress. Slow progress is still progress! Passed my theory test April 9th 2024 and got my practical test booked for 7th October 2025. My reaction times are a bit slow and I can't practice outside of lessons due to not having a car, plus im learning in a manual car and my parents' car is an automatic, but I'm glad I'm taking the time to learn to drive, I've wanted to learn to drive for a while, glad im learning now when im in my 20s.

Good on you for getting up early and going to the gym! I wish I had your discipline!
