Autism and dizzy balance problems

Why do I and others with autism suffer with dizzy and balance? Is it linked with the autism or is it anxiety involved as well? I have both. I get it most of the time and it disrupts my sleep and daily life

  • Whenever I walked towards the food carriage of the Belfast to Dublin train, I lost balance; appearing drunk. Also, I was sick, countless times, on trains and coaches.

    However, I enjoy such trips.

  • I've toppled over and fell, numerous times But i don't thimk it's anything to do with me being autistic, I have Hypothyroidism, I'd never even heard of it. But the nurse in the hospital said your thyroids control just about every organ in your body, head-to-toe. I've just been given a certificate which declares me partially sighted. Both the RNIB and the Social Services who have helped with adaptations here at my home. Both say i should get a carer. But this is where the autism comes in. For the moment at least, i'd rather struggle than have someone coming into my house.

  • Thanks for all your replies. Sorry for my late response I promise I'm not a jerk! I wasn't ignoring you and I am grateful for your help with this.

Interestingly I've been adjusting my diet but that hasn't done a lot except muck up me stomach. I've been tired zero energy could be tumour related though. Maybe I'm not doing enough footie? Stuck out tongue winking eyeWink

  • Dizziness can be an ear problem, nothing to do with autism.  Alternatively, yes indeed, your sensory profile might mean that your balance and or proprioception can be affected. I used to get really dizzy going up and down stairs as a kid.  I was frightened and used to shuffle down on my bottom.

  • It could be neurological. There is some evidence that autistic brains have more short-range connections and fewer long-range connections than average. Long-range connections are between areas of the brain. Maintaining balance is a very complex process that occurs in the brain. It's performed by multiple parts of the brain and any constraint on how the different parts of the brain communicate will have an effect on how efficiently balance is managed.

  • I feel for you I really do. I have generalized anxiety disorder and I was surprised with how many symptoms anxiety can actually cause, and yeah dizziness is amongst them. I'm dizzy a lot, it comes and goes but it can also cause headaches and nausea for me.

Try to relax, take deep breaths and let the anxiety settle. When I'm calmer the symptoms are less noticable.

  • Anxiety definitely causes a slew of physical symptoms. And dizziness can be one of them.
I certainly noticed as my background anxiety generally decreased then my nausea and dizziness also improved.
