  • "High functioning" is a really rubbish term to use for anyone with autism. Autism is just different for different people. When people view me as "high functioning" what they mean is that I'm intelligent and blend in with NT people. They don't see my internal struggles and how difficult it is to sustain being seen as normal.

  • As I understand it, 'High Functioning' generally means 'not affecting language or cognition'; in 2013, the NHS decided that the term 'Aspergers' had no clinical significance and that it was just autism, that didn't affect these two areas. I stand to be corrected if I've got that wrong and anyone knows better.

  • Some people are told a "level" these days. I had no such thing though, my NHS diagnosis is just Autistic Spectrum Condition.

  • OK. Interesting.  Didn't know that.  I was told "autism, mild to moderate, not affecting language or cognition."  Then the usual multipage report which I know others are familiar with.
