probiotics

I have just been doing some very basic research into probiotics and Autism. I'm going to talk to my health visitor and/or GP about it. My son is 6 , has been diagnosed with Aspergers and has had some digestive issues in the past. Some of the research I've seen has been really positive for some  cases, but I need to do more research and get proper advice. I just wondered if anyone had any experience of using probiotics.

  • crystal12 makes a good point. The correlation between autism and bowel issues might simply be down to the chronic stress/anxiety that is part of the autistic condition.

I have Aspergers, high anxiety etc, but have never had bowel issues. I put this down to eating a balanced diet, high in fibre. I am not a fussy eater, but many on the spectrum are. And this might also explain bowel issues.

Regarding ***-feeding, my mother ***-fed me for 14 months, and I was very easy to feed. So it is not true that every child with ASC is difficult to feed, although I accept that for a fair number this can be the case. But we are all different.

  • Hi - in my case I wasn't difficult to *** feed my son at all.

Probiotics seem harmless + are said to improve good bacteria in the gut.  This is said to be a good thing for the digestive system.  Drinking enough liquid also helps improve bowel movement, as does eating roughage.   If you think about it, the brain + the gut seem to have a nervous connection.  Think about being anxious, worried etc + how it can affect your digestive system.  Phrases such as "butterflies in the tummy", "sick with worry", having to hurry to the toilet when frightened, etc.  Apparently there are a lot of nerves in the digestive system.  So tried + tested methods of helping anyone's digestive system to operate healthily can only be good.

  • Hi there,

My son has ASC too. He is 5 yrs old. He has some bowel issues sometimes, usually pre-emted by illness. It seems to bung him up! Watch out for Ibruprofen - its fab for temperature control with nasty viruses, but constipates my little boy. What digestive issues does your son have?

Really think it is a great idea to give probiotics. How can it harm??? There is lots of stuff about diet and autism, particularly about gluten. I am a little sceptical, tbh. My son eats like a horse - not sure how I could possibly knock gluten out of his diet. The thought makes me quiver! But a harmless supplement can only do good, I would have thought.

Have read Hohner's reply about formula milk and am a bit perplexed. Some babies can only have formula [for whatever reason and most do really well]. I did *** feed my little boy .... but OMG!!!! it was HARD, because of his extra-sensory impairment. I was very stubborn and kept on expressing and managing to get him on the ***, until he was 5 mnths old, but babies with ASC are notoriously hard to B/F. So if you didn't please do not blame yourself.

My son [despite the breasfeeding!] has had 2 frightening and serious bacterial infections, one very recently, and I have put him on ecinacea, manuka honey and floradix. I'll find out, when he goes back to school, if it has had the required effect of boosting his immune system.

    Good luck. Love Rosemary. xx

  • Calagas has a good point, I have found and later confirm by research that milk(A2) and probiotics,, help form a mucus in bowel which helps gel the bowel waste together.

I have found that my bowels movements are related to my autism symptoms, the blood from the brain is going into the bowels to move them during stress.  I find that adding a glass of A2 milk to my diet has lessen the bowels movements and slowed down my system with the mucus forming from the milk,  which has helped by autism. Smile

  • I give my ASD son pro biotics. I get the kids powders. They seem to help with my sons loose nappies.

  • Thanks for both reples. It's good to find other people's opinions on these things. The mineral water is an interesting one. To reassure the last responder, I'm certainly not pinning hopes on one thing being a cure, but thankyou for taking the time to respond.  I just wondered if it might make him more physically comfortable and if anyone had experienced success or the opposite.

  • *SIGH*

    NOTHING can cure Autism.

Various things may help reduce the stressors that cause the symptoms of autism and so lead to a reduction in said symptoms.

What those stressors are varies from person to person, so you have to take all such supposed wonder treatments with a pinch of salt and, instead, work out what helps you or your child as an individual.

  • Hi bobs76,,

I have aspergers too,, I also have digestive problems. Here is my thoughts on Probiotics,

1.) I believe the brain gets its electrolyte message from the 100 trillion bacterial gut, so for me, it is very important for the correct gut dynamics to develop the brain function, hence why it takes 2 - 3 years for the childs mind to form,, ie talking, function etc

2.) The world health organisation has given guide lines to say that FORMULA MILK is not fit for purpose and the world bacterial organisations state... that formula milk does not form the correct type of bacterical requirements for a human child, so it causes health problems in later life, ie digestive, auto immune and cognitive issues.

3.) On a good note, Probiotics by formation of bacterial exchange form a cell genetic protection barrier substance called Spermidine which has been studied in Oxford Uni as the long-life cell substance. It comes naturally via your own genes, but can be topped up using probiotics, cheese(matured), peas, mushrooms and grapefruits.

I have found drinking high level mineral water, french evian and badoit has helped my bowels, I have a gut feeling that the tap soft water I get does not have enought magnesium or potassium in it, also chlorine is poison,(used as a gas in wars, hot steam from a shower is potential lung cancer, and W.H.O also state cancer concerns, however the public good is still served due to less bacterial disease.)

More general information,, than anything else. Hope you can get something positive from it anyway Smile
