anyone used independent speech therapist?

Hi!

My 9 yer old son has autism and serious communication problems but our PCT refused to provide any services that involves speech therapists.

I am now looking for an independent speech therapist.  Wodnering if there are anyone who used (or are currently using) an independent speech therapist? How is your experience? How mcuh does it cost? I live in West Midlands. Any independent speech therapists that you can recommend?

I've checked website of speech therapists in independent practice and sent e-mail to a fews therapists but none of them have replied!

anyone knows?

  • Hi, fees for private therapy can vary quite a lot, and depend on things like where you are based, the therapist's experience and whether a particular approach is required.  Prices typically can range from £50 - £100 a session, whilst initial assessments (almost always required) are normally between £100 - £250.  This article is a good introduction in private speech therapy therapy http://findslt.co.uk/advice/16/What-is-Private-Speech-Therapy

  • Hiya, yes, I have used independent SLT who I found by going to www.helpwithtalking.com

By chance I found the most incredible SLT – I am so glad she is in independent practice – her talents would be completely wasted in the NHS.

I used her for my dd's severe receptive and expressive language delay (chronological age 4 years 1 month, receptive language age 18months). Our SLT managed to progress my daughter's language 18months to 2 years within the space of 9 months of weekly therapy. It was the best money we have ever spent on my dd!

By contrast, at the same time we had my dd assessed by NHS SLT. Result of assessment was 'no language problems identifiable'!!!

If you find a good one they are worth their weight in gold! They are pricey though. Can't advise about W Mids and I am not in your area. I would maybe ring rather than e-mail?

  • hi again - yes it's v sad, to put it mildly.  Perhaps the nas helpline could help you or maybe someone in your area may respond to your post.  Perhaps your gp may know.    You've obviously been trying yourself but they can't be short of work if they're not even bothering to respond.  Sorry I can't be of more help + also if I'm suggesting things you've already tried.   bw

  • Hi! Crystal 12, thank you so much for your prompt post.

My son has selective mutism and can't "rebel" feeling (every feeling he perceives is either "happy" or "not happy",and if he is not happy he gets melt-down, this is only way he can experss his negative feelings), can't tell if he is in ill or pain (he misses the right timing of treatment), he can't express his needs (resulting in "wet himself", as he can't tell the teacher he needs toilet). PCT told me that he is not serious enougth to have SALT. Very sad.....

  • hi - hope you don't mind me asking why your son isn't getting speech therapy via the nhs?
