I would advise against her disclosing that she is autistic. My autistic niece is doing a similar course and is applying for a university place to study nursing. Theres a great deal of competition for places and the medical profession still sees autism as something negative. After a bit of contact with those who teach nursing we're convinced that saying you're autistic is a bad idea fo someone wanting to go into nursing. They'll make all the right noises but you won't get a place.
People on the spectrum are considered to be able to keep their head in a crisis, and deal with emergencies etc. This is a definate plus factor for a would be nurse. She may have to practise her bedside manner if she is a reluctant communicator. The best nurses can comfort and reassure.
Good luck to her.
I'm not exactly sure, but it sounds like she is very intelligent and any good university should hopefully make sure she has any extra support she may need i.e helping her with good communication skills e.t.c My mum made it as a nurse- and only now has apsergers been recognised. So if my mum can go to university and become a nurse, without aspergers being diagnosed, there is a good chance your daughter will make it and get extra support if asked for.
