Respect

I think it's somewhat lacking these days.

I see a lack of it everywhere:

The way people relate to one another

The way people drive

The rubbish thrown away in public spaces

The trashing of our natural environment

The shouty politics

Cruelty to wildlife

What do you think?

I personally think the world would be a much better place if respect for everyone and everything, however different to us, and different their views (if human) were taught to children so that they could grow up to be respectful people.

  • Someone threw garbage at the bottom of my door and coffee onto my door ornament.  Incidents were happening since April.

    Sorry to hear that.

    People can be horrid.

I used to get that when I lived in a flat in the centre of the city.

After pub closing time was the worst and I won't say what used to happen then, but it wasn't pleasant.

I hope that this problem stops.

  • I've dealt with my share of lacking respect.  Someone threw garbage at the bottom of my door and coffee onto my door ornament.  Incidents were happening since April.  The coffee that was splashed onto my ornament was the last straw and I reported everything to the landlord.  I was told to pou a note on my door saying to leave the door alone and that I've made reports to the office and I will continue to do so.

  • Many thank yous all for your replies which I have read with interest.

  • I enjoyed lockdown for the most part too, but there were a few people who were really hostile and aggressive, my dog, who was a big puppy still at the time and I were nearly physically attacked whilst on a walk, some people were really nice whilst others seemed to go the other way and behaviour was worse. It didn't help that our rules were different in Wales than those in England, the lack of basic repsect was shocking, both personally and as someone who's English, it made me ashamed to be English, the attitudes were so rude and colonial

  • So did I. It was the first time I'd been paid properly in a while

  • Here is my take B.

The problem is the internet. And reality tv. How people consume information. Young people cut things out so quickly in their mind. they lack empathy because so many of their interactions are not human but digital. The digital world is more easily hijacked by bad actors.

I agree with you totally, I was born at the end of the seventies. Everything in my life was about family and real experiences. People cared about each others and were tolerant and behaved most of the time. These were values past on from parents to children, if children didn't behave they were disciplined. The baby boomer generation were highly disciplined for doing wrong. The current generation, and new parental generation have little to no discipline because many of them were sat in front of the internet, instead of playing with friends and toys. In the eighties they said if you watched to much tv you’d get square eyes, that is what a lot of generation z have (square eyes). They don’t understand the world properly they view everything like its for entertainment, this includes others suffering.

And reality tv because these people are not good role models they only want fame.

What is scary is how quickly everything can be manipulated with lies, those in power or the media using what we take for granted as safe to exploit us. In other words false narratives - to support their own beliefs or aims.

  • I really enjoyed lockdown, even though I worked all the way through, I saw far fewer people which is always nice but everyone seemed "nicer" and more respectful, it certainly snapped back hard once it was lifted.

Don't get me started on social media!

  • I agree and they've made a narrative for themselves to hook others in with.

  • It is sad that the community spirit that showed early during COVID didn't last for long.

I think one of the most concerning things is the speed that unrest starts via social media and it appears often with people who just arrive to have a fight.

However I would like to see more reporting of the good things that happen. I am sad to say I can be surprised when someone thanks me for making way for them, including young people on bikes.

  • There has  always been a well of nastiness swilling about and now instead of just being confined to a few grumpies in the pub, they can reach out across the world and find others who agree with them and are even more extreme.

    Incels are pretty scary.

  • I fiond some of the worst offenders are people of a similar age to me and we were brought up to respect others and our surroundings.

In some ways it's got a lot worse and in others I'm not sure how much it's changed, a lot of people don't know what their indicators are for when driving, I'm always noticing it in supermarket carparks, but then cars have got so much bigger that it often seems like you take pot luck when leaving.

I think there's always been a section of society that dosent' give a damn about others, who are happy to dump their rubbish all over the place.

I think a lot of political discourse has got worse sinse brexit and the advent of social media, people want sound bites not considered discussion, attention spans seem to have got shorter too, probably another side effect of social media. Social media and politicians seem to be telling everyone how badly off they are, which in many cases is true, prices have way outstripped wages, espcially house prices and rents. But there are lots of things that I think are being stirred up without a real cause, its just headlines and sound bites, click bait.

There has  always been a well of nastiness swilling about and now instead of just being confined to a few grumpies in the pub, they can reach out across the world and find others who agree with them and are even more extreme.

  • Of course, but the companies are made up of individuals, at least the majority are for now.

  • Respect and consideration could save our environment and the world from destruction.

Indeed but it takes companies and governments, not just individuals, to effect really major change, sadly.

  • Respect and consideration for others are increasingly diminishing.

Many politicians don’t debate; they try to score points and don’t seek to move an issue forward.

Fly tipping is a huge problem not too far from where I live and people throw plastic waste out of their cars so it’s lining the the sides of the road. The financial cost to the public is likely significant, not to mention the detrimental impact on public wellbeing, the harm to wildlife and the environment.

Yes, it’s cruelty to wildlife as many animals haven’t evolved to deal with plastic getting caught like a noose around their necks, as happens to seals, swans and other species. The evolution of modern plastics and other ‘disposable’ materials has contributed to the issue even though it isn’t a direct cause.

Then there’s space junk which could become a risk to our planet and species in ways that aren’t fully understood yet.

Respect and consideration could save our environment and the world from destruction.

  • I teach my daughter to respect others. For me it's one of the most important things.

    Heart

  • It's a very good post! I see a lot of selfishness in the society and demanding attitude. I'm tired of it and usually don't engage with entitled people. The world is crazy and it's getting worse. I teach my daughter to respect others. For me it's one of the most important things.

  • That's pretty amazing, I really love all of this! it's very inspiring!

  • PS: weeks ago I found 2 supermarket trolleys in the middle of a park. I filled them up with the park's rubbish --to the top. Then recycled part of it, then took back to the supermarket. That was painful tho but also fun.

I had to put one trolley on top of the other to return in one trip.

    That's brilliant.

    What an efffort!
