Others not helping mental health

I wonder if anyone else finds when they are struggling it is made worse by things that have to be done.

I am off work due to burnout. Among other things I needed to do was to get a sick note. I have to complete an online form on the 8th day, which I did before they open. It said off work with stress. Later in the morning I get an email to call to make an appointment. When I get through,, I am told they have run out of appointments for a week's time, so have to ring at 8 the next day. When I call I am asked about filling in an online form, so have to explain why I called. I then get told the slot I have for the call. I don't understand when they see I am stressed, why they don't just email the appointment for a week, as I had no choice. All this adds to the stress before even waiting for the call.

  • Sorry to hear about the stuff you had to deal with just to get a GP appointment. I remember only too well the 8am scramble to get anything booked with my GP surgery, often from my mobile phone while I was commuting into work. Now there's an online patient triage system which, while not perfect, at least gives me time and space to get across what I need to without the stress of phoning. I dread to think what it'd be like if I ever move elsewhere, and worry about what'll happen to those who don't have a computer or internet access.

  • I understand some of what you are experiencing. It is such a palaver to arrange something that used to be straightforward. I don’t know why GP surgeries won’t email appointments. There is an unacceptable burden placed on patients, even more so when patients are in circumstances such as you describe or are in poor health other ways.

Recently, I had a dreadful experience at my GP surgery due to ‘the system’, so you have my sympathy.

  • I know what you mean, I'm guessing you mean the doctors surgery? I'm so glad ours actually has appointments that can be booked in advance and not just on the day ones.

Our pharamacy is getting as bad, there's always queues and often you have to go back later in the day or the next day if they've not got stuff in, there are queues of frustrated people who think they've got a prescription waiting for them and haven't because the app thingy never seems to work properly and yet they all think this is the best thing since sliced bread and want us all to use it.
