Resistant starch as a means of helping the gut

Resistant starch is something that forms when oats are soaked overnight or when rice, pasta or potatoes are boiled and then put in the fridge to cool for at least an hour.

Later you can eat the food either cold or reheated.

A lot of Autistic people have leaky gut problems which is why it's known there is a frequent link between being Autistic and being intolerant towards wheat and dairy and some other foods.

Resistant starch increases butyrate in your body which the body uses to seal up patches or holes in the gut. Butter is another source of butyrate too but may be more of a problem for people to consume as it's high in fat and some people don't tolerate dairy well.

Have any of you tried eating resistant starch? You probably have even if you don't think so. If you eat frozen chips you're consuming resistant starch as the potatoes have been cooked once before being frozen. Oven chips are not particularly healthy though because they contain seed oils like sunflower oil which are a kind of fat humans aren't supposed to consume (unlike the more healthy fats such as olive oil).

  • I find that adding corn starch to meals helps with my digestion (slows it down). I'm not sure to what extent it's just because it's fiber-free calories so I don't have to eat as much of everything else.

  • Dunno about "leaky Gut"?

However, I know that resistant starch feeds good gut bacteria, aids digestion and may help weight loss.

I now only eat frozen potato products (fries, wedges & hash browns) and our bread is put straight into the freezer and defrosted a few slices at a time as required. I don't eat oats for breakfast, I have natural yogurt which helps increase good bacteria too.

  • Have you tried making bread with spelt flour? Lots of people find it easier to digest because of its lower gluten content.

  • I agree the Chorley Wood process of making bread has made things worse for people's digestion. I suffer far less if I eat a sourdough bread, though with every attempt at eating it I've still always bloated and felt sleepy.

  • I'm not sure I believe in leaky guts, I know they're all the rage in alternative medicine circles and have been for years. My biggest question is how if your gut is leaking fecal matter into the bloodstream and surrounding cavities in the abdomen, do we not get peritonits or blood poisoning?

Becoming dairy intolerant is pretty natural, it's only humans and our domesticates that consume milk and milk products after infancy.

Wheat and gluten allergies are becoming more common, I think its because of the Chorley Wood bread making process by which nearly all supermarket bread is made and has been for decades. Gluten is quite a hard protein to digest and needs to be treated properly to make it digestable, home made bread or in a machine where it is kneeded, and rested a couple of times makes gluten digestible, bread making shouldn't take an hour, but at least 4. I noticed when working at a B&B/retreat house that we would have lots of people coming who said they wheat intolerant and we respected that, but s few, espeially those on retreat would come into the kitchen and see some freshly made bread and demolish almost a whole loaf with no ill efects, I think this was because we hand made all our bread. Coeliac is a different problem, gluten can be life threatening to a coeliac and the two should never be confused.
