Informing work of my diagnosis help

I have just received my diagnosis for autism,

im currently off work to care for my daughter and have not told work of my diagnosis

is it best to tell them?

and how to do it as my anxiety is through the roof??

  • You might want to look into the Equality Act 2010. Your employer should not discriminate against you and you may be entitled to Reasonable Adjustments

www.acas.org.uk has information you might want to look at before deciding what you want to do : under the talking about disability section on their website

  • It's entirely up to you if you tell your work about your autism. I would first try to get to know them as best you can so you can get a feel of them and whether they'll really understand and not bully you etc.

When I was working in a supermarket I told everyone about my autism, this was in February and afterwards a lot of bullying took place and even the manager seemed to bully and do nothing about it.

I left there in the end.

It's your choice but please be careful because some people can be horrible about this sort of thing.

  • Yeah I think they need to know only so they get where I’m coming from and I am the way I am thank you both for your reply’s

  • Thank you so much, I will take a couple of days more to get my head around it, the problem I have is this is my second stint of being off for a while and they will only sit a little longer for me to go back!! Which I don’t want to

  • In my opinion, that purpose of the diagnosis was to help you. It'll help you understand yourself and also the things you struggle with and why.

The time I feel it's necessary to tell anyone is if that helps you, if you need them to be more understanding, make adjustments to your work environment to make it less stressful, or just by having them know makes you more comfortable. It's upto you , there's no need to tell anyone if you don't want to, but if you want anyone to help in any way then they would need to know.

Take your time and decide what works best for you, everyone sees this differently and it's probably more stressful at the moment as you've just been told you're autistic and need to process that and come to terms with it yourself, to decide what it means to you, without the overhead of explaining to others.

Hope this helps! Take care :)

  • I just got diagnosed myself and faced this dilemma. Firstly do they need to know? if so who are the most important people that need to be informed?

For me, i told my line manager first and then told the team i work in. After that i have told some of the wider team that i have known a long time and trust. Nobody else really needs to know, so i'm going to see how it goes. If anything comes up where i need to mention it then i will.

I found it less overwhelming to do it in stages.

Good luck, i hope it goes well.
