My head is a repository of all the old sayings my mum used when I was little and they stuck.
I only ever hear people my age (50+) using these now.
It's a shame if their use disappears completely.
I'd be curious to know whether any of the younger members of the forum know/use these.
Please share any you know.
There is a lot of wisdom in these.
A few that spring to mind immediately.
A stitch in time saves nine.

Jack of all trades, master of none

A fool and his money are soon parted

You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink...
It's good wholesome fun, but heavy on your back, and if you don't "flare" the wing vigorously on landing it pitches you onto your face.
But that only happens once, its a really quick learning experience.
1000'ft in a hang glider for the first time, when you (cough) had a little smoke before you went, is about as multiply high as one can get!
I have an idea, and then make-do with whatever I have to hand....spending money is aggravation to me! New stuff rarely excites me and/or rapidly disappoints. I like to use what I've got - make do and mend etc.
What's that you say Mr Sperg?....you want me to try hand gliding?!
I'm all the gear, cba, let's do something different
I'm really pleased (and surprised) that this thread has kept going so long.
I've learnt some new ones to fill up my brain!
That's me!!
(Occasionally it turns out that I had some idea.. Then I spend the money on gear...)
Better late than never!
I've been musing of this one for 3 days now.........I JUST got it !
All the gear, no idea!

When you assume, it makes an ass out of u and me!
Is it the same for yer yanmar and perkins type mechanical diesel injectors?
I'll be extra careful with that next time. I've got a genny that simply will not start and it should it's only got 80 hours on it. I managed to reposition the injector outside of the cylinder and it seems to spray an aerosol fairly well. I want to get it done this summer, and I'll certainly take extra care around that side of things.
Which just goes to prove the old saying: "never pick at a metaphor, it can leave a nasty scab"...

Bill Bryson - Made in America
Interesting! Which book was it?
Funnily enough, in the book I'm reading right now, literally 10 pages ago.
"Among the Yiddish words that found their way... into mainstream English... plus a raft of expressions without which American English would be very much the poorer: I should live so long, I should worry, get lost, I'm coming already, I need it like I need a hole in the head, and many others"
So next time you think about it, you can say a silent thank you to the early American Jewish folk.
