My head is a repository of all the old sayings my mum used when I was little and they stuck.
I only ever hear people my age (50+) using these now.
It's a shame if their use disappears completely.
I'd be curious to know whether any of the younger members of the forum know/use these.
Please share any you know.
There is a lot of wisdom in these.
A few that spring to mind immediately.
A stitch in time saves nine.
He who hesitates is lost.
Look before you leap.
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
Jack of all trades, master of none
A rolling stone gathers no moss.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained
Out of the frying pan, into the fire
Youth is wasted on the young
Kill two birds with one stone.
A bad workman blames his tools
A fool and his money are soon parted
Honesty is the best policy
Absence makes the heart grow fonder
Careless talk costs lives
Don't rob Peter to pay Paul
My mother sometimes used to say 'mocking's catching' - in other words, be careful what you make fun of in others, one day it might be you with that 'affliction', or your child, or anyone you care about.
Fair words butter no parsnips, nor put salt in yer porridge
Going around the wrekin..
Ar*e over tea kettle..
Mud in your eye..
Red hat no drawers..
I am following the last two now, leaving my husband to cook dinner! Not broth though...
Every cloud has a silver lining (I wish)
I can never see the silver lining...
Need a new telescope so I can see better
Too many cooks spoil the broth
If you can't stand the heat stay out of the kitchen
Who 'of a certain age' isn't thinking about these this afternoon?
Ha ha, if you put your shoe size into European size, you would be a 42. That’s the best I can offer!
I’ve got teeny size sevens as well so I hope I’m just slightly more mature than that number!
Lol that's not very comforting but it tells you how it is
I know some of those.
I've used them before.
On occasion.
Here's one you may have heard. My Gran says it about me.
Old before your time and wise head on your shoulders.
I find the last one odd as our heads sit on our necks, not our shoulders. But I'm not about to correct our ancestors for getting the anatomy wrong.
The apple never fell far from the tree!
You’re not as green as you are cabbage looking.
Welcome back Martin.
You have just reminded me of 'actions speak louder than words' ...
I have a good one, "Fine words butter no parsnips". My parents, when I was a child, thought that I had made it up, but I eventually found it in a book, much to their surprise.
In Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin novels ,set in Nelson's navy, Captain Aubrey is always mangling sayings and Biblical quotes - like gabardine swine, rather than Gadarene swine - to which his knowing friend, Dr Maturin (naval surgeon), suggests even more convoluted 'corrections'.
Act your age, not your shoe size!
I like ‘what can’t be cured must be endured’. It doesn’t comfort much though!
just thought of another one - you can't put an old head on young shoulders. So very true!
