Autism assessment - emotionally intensive?

I have my first autism assessment appointment next week and it is just before work.

I was just wondering others who have gone through the NHS process, how intense was it? I work with young children so I do not want to turn up to work overwhelmed if it is quite intense.

Sharing any experiences would be really helpful!

  • I think it will very much depend on your life experiences, if these have been difficult to deal with, then be prepared for a revisiting of those, especially if you have never talked about these with any other person.

There is a lot the assessor will be able to learn about your difficulties from these though.

I personally almost withdrew part way through as I found it extremely intense, but this was about my life experience's which I'm sure will be very different from yours.

  • @Kate Kestrel

    Hi, Kate,

I'm very sorry to interrupt. I sent you a FR recently, because I've a small message from a mutual friend who's now departed. It's nothing at all to worry about and is very brief anyway but the messages accompanying Requests tend to disappear before one gets to read them fully; so I couldn't simply write it in that message, you see.  :)

  • I had my nhs assessment towards the end of last year and it wasn’t too bad in many ways. I had my husband with me and it was done online with a video call with an assessor. It wasn’t upsetting in most respects but I was very tense and afterwards I felt very tired.  I needed to have really quiet time and peace for the rest of the day to recover. The assessor was very low key and not overly friendly, and because I didn’t get much feedback I was left feeling unsettled about how it had gone. I’ve still not had the ‘results’ of the assessment and that’s very frustrating.
I hope it goes well for you - it’ll be worth it hopefully! Having a diagnosis is helpful in various ways - both my sons have a diagnosis and it has been positive for them for lots of reasons. Good luck!

  • This is very reassuring as I will probably end up doing this Grimacing I will try and plan a bit beforehand. Thank you for your response!

  • Thank you for your reply, I will definitely take it into consideration. I will just take my time Blush

  • Mine wasn’t via the NHS, but an assessment is an assessment, and you will probably be anxious before hand, and overthink your answers afterwards, and all tne things you forgot to say Grimacing. Only you know how you react to stressful situations, so try and give yourself downtime as soon as you are able.

  • And if you are a little slow to work that morning, then that is fine too, it is right that you do not feel pressured where your health is concerned..

  • No.. the only trouble you find is the trouble you take in with you..Innocent

Just be honest and speak your experience. Most of the evidence they take is from behind the mask, you likely are unaware of most of the cracks in your mask, and that’s good its their job to see what you are not aware of..Slight smile
