Advice scored 0 points on PIP assessment with autism and other disabilities

I've just received my decision letter. I scored 0 points despite living with autism, spine problems, severe osteoarthritis, anxiety and inflammatory bowel disease. Autism mainly effects social interaction and emotions. I have no friends, can't socialise and only drive locally. I also wear a prescribed knee brace and am waiting for a consultation for joint replacement.

The assessor decided that because I can drive, do short period of online voluntary work and am a carer for my ASD son that I do not meet any criteria. Also mentioned anxiety can't be an issue because I don't take drugs for it. I self referred to local mental health trust for therapy but ended up making a formal complaint as they missed calls. I tried medication years ago and ended up with heart palpitations and mood swings.

I've asked for a mandatory consideration as decision letter didn't even mention autism or my disabilities. It had duplicated text and mistakes in it and said I didn't mention difficulties during assessment. I did and we talked about pain, panic attacks and mobility problems.

I'm prepared to ho to tribunal just yo bring an end to the constant paperwork and to finally get a definite answer.

  • Free Markets; ie not regulated by the State.

  • i too did something similar, where instead of like a 20 year employment gap i instead stretched the one job i had one time for like 4 months to cover 20 years lol

  • yeah thats the thing with the jobcenter though, they really dont want anyone else claiming money as they dont have it and their job now is to bar people from any handout. they dont want to help their job is to save the gov money by preventing claims and kicking existing claims off.

there was a person with legs blown off and because he got prosthetics and tried to help himself he lost his claim. any attempt to improve yourself will get you kicked off. which is funny because it shows medication for anxiety doesnt work and likely hinders and makes you worse which is why they want you on that for it to count. going off those drugs and avoiding them helps you and they dont want you helping or improving as it harms eligibility. so its kinda a indication that even the gov knows medications dont work and makes things worse.

its funny because i had social anxiety so bad i never left the house for years and felt agoraphobic and would shake if i went out and other strangers were around me.... yet that wont count for this because i never took medication or even went to the gp as i dont really tell anyone anything or go to the gp for anything. so my anxiety that locked me away and had me shaking in others presence wouldnt have counted lol

  • My Kashmiri friend gave me a zeroxed crib sheet with the right answers, which apparently is how you need to play that game in order to win....

I do actually think I need the money, but not THAT much. There should be a better way...

  • PS my PhD stipend was 7,500 but that was decades ago. Sometimes I wonder where the time has gone.

  • I have a BSc, Masters by Research and a PhD all in the sciences. Sadly I could never cope in management so ended up in low paid roles that didn't cover childcare costs. Then I developed other disabilities which made life harder and was bullied. I now volunteer in health research  its odd because now my views are highly sought after and appreciated

I applied for PIP thinking I might finally get some help with costs. The older I get the more the sutism becomes apparent. I think I used to nask but now I don't bother. I realised recently that I haven't had friends for over 30 years but I'm worried about older age

  • I understand how you feel because I have similar problems.  I did more  qualifications because I couldn't get a job and now I'm overqualified.  I have been turned down for jobs because the issue was that I'm better qualified on paper than the management and they fear that I will resent working for them.

I only have my present job because I omitted to mention my degrees.  My boss only has A levels.  I checked him out on LinkedIn.

  • Having a PhD usually means that you are employable in a very small and restricted field of work, with few jobs available. Then if you look for work outside that field, employers consider that you are 'overqualified'.

  • Me too.  I got zero.

I was advised by so called experts to apply for it and they filled the forms out for me.  But I still got zero points after the face to face assessment.

The assessment was a farce and the assessor asked 'trick' questions which were not on the original form.

  • Get specialist advice from Citizens Advice or one of the big charities if there is one related to one of your medical conditions. The process is designed for you to fail so you really benefit from speaking to an expert. A few years ago something like 75% of cases that went to appeal - the stage after mandatory consideration - were won - so its really worth keep going with it, but expect it to be a long process.

  • I just think you have a weird idea of PhDs. If you have a PhD in a science subject, its highly likely you will get a very well paid job at the end of it, in fact you are probably on a very generous stipend to do the phD in the first place. If you are doing arts or humanities you are probably paying your own way and may well only get a not much above minimum wage job at the end of it unless you want to go into lecturing.

  • The game of "money & employment" seems to have certain rules and ways that things happen.

There are certain things one can do that seem to make the acquisition of enough money to live comfortably easier, and I based my question on the observation of two individuals had concluded that getting a PHD was one that worked really well.

Which it is of course for the NT's.

If you are however painted with the same Autistic brush I am, then it really doesn't make any difference what you achieve does it? NT society still treats you like shoe scrapings..

  • I don't understand this comment. I haven't worked for ten years due to disability and caring for my ASD son. I used to earn less than graduate salary as I only felt comfortable in jobs where I wasn't responsible for anyone. I left my last job because I was bullied for being different and for time off due yo my disabilities.

  • I'm curious.

I thought having a a PHD was practically like owning a small mint!

Why would you need to interact with the eaters of souls who administer this particular benefit?

  • The whole point is that there's trickery and deception built in.

That means that the obtained benefit will be poisonous to the user...

I'm amazed everyday about how unable to recognise and avoid the basic mechanisms of Evil we all are these days...

  • Thank you. That's a very sensible approach. I'm not really sure what I can't do. Make and keep friends is an obvious one. Follow diversions when driving. I only drive locally as get very stressed when in unknown areas. Change of car caused issues for three months :/. I can't read emotions and don't feel many emotions either but none of this seems very relevant. I suffer from overloads and switch off.

I think it's held against me because I have a PhD. I kind of fell into it and managed to scrape through with no support or friends

  • They trick you into mentioning things you CAN do. Keep the focus on what you can't do.
