Bosses to avoid if possible

The work situations I have been in where relationships have completely broken down have all had two things in common:  the main one is that the "boss" had to control every aspect of me and work, this seemed to validate their sense of being a "boss"; the second thing which is destructive is they do not listen.

What have you noticed about the impossible boss?

  • Yes, very true.

Skills and abilities almost seem a disadvantage,

They allow people to buy into the lies that control them.

The people at the top have an alpha wolf mentality,

a bit of bullying, deceit, multiple personalities and theft is all OK as long as you can get away with it.

Skills make you honest and gullible, greed makes you strong and ruthless.

Obviously saying this is not going to make anyone popular with anyone,

so the wolves at the top preach capitalism as the new morality and they have the loudest howl.

  • I'm a Software Engineer, Silver, and what you say is all too true.

    Absolutely!!

The problem with being a techie, Easy, is that non-techies don't know how much work goes into it, and how much knowledge you need.  The easier software is to use the less they apreciate the work behind it. The only time you get appreciated is when you get someone out of a hole. They can then be very appreciative of something that took five minutes, and take for granted something that took weeks of work.

I read of someone who used to work in graphics and got fed up of clients complaining of the price because they found it hard to believe just how long the work had taken. So she changed to doing office work that people could do themselves but if they could deligate it to a compitent person it would free then to do other things - that they apreciated and would pay for. It was something they understood the value of.

People with power and money value people that have their way of looking at things. Having skills or abilities is almost incidentental to "getting on", and many people with skills and abilities don't get on at all.

  • The main thing that used to annoy me at work was it was so unfair.

I was a teccie, doing difficult computer stuff,

but the salespeople who used to get drunk and misbehave used to get a lot more money.

It is much easier to say something is broken and fix it than to do the work,

But managers seem to get paid more, even if they know less.

It seem the system is corrupt and always has been, greedy people get to the top then promote other greedy people like them so the honest people dont take over and out them.

It seems skills are a cost and money is what its all about, anybody who has control of a big pile of money is superior to anybody who is honest and works hard.

In the end I just found this all too demotivating and I just didnt want to be part of a corrupt system anymore.

  • Hi - Everyone has their strengths + weaknesses.  A good "boss" can be hard to find.  Basic personality traits will always come to the fore.  He/she has the power.  Those "below" the boss can : a) ingratiate themselves with the boss ("yes people") or: b) will oppose the boss (difficult if there's no backing from anyone else), or: c) shut up + do as they're told.  All this is not healthy for the individual or the organisation.  Much more effort should be put in at the very top of organisations to recruit those in charge with the necessary qualifications + "people skills". By doing this the organisation will be better.  As work can take up so much of your life it's definitely worthwhile looking for another job which suits your personality more.  I know, easier said than done.  There's a lot of disfunctionality out there.

  • Social psychopaths(aka the boss) and people on the Autism spectrum do not mix class.

So, there is no real debate here... Autism spectrum people, need trust and true two sided communication in a work place.

I would find employment were you work under your own steam or in a work environment with minimum cognitive force by others, aka the boss whipper who thinks he has a position, title rank and owes you in some way.

Your conflict here is...,  you know the boss is an ********,, he knows that you know that, so he sees you are a threat, thus you must be destroyed under his control games. Play him at his own little game,, destroy him first, he has more to lose. Put in complains, tell others about him, be blunt with him, etc, etc,, it is the only language he will know. Try and get the sack, but you will not, because if you complain first to the higher bosses in writing for a written record before you react to him. Then complain of a unfair dismissal, not that it will come to that, try and get other employees on side first. FIGHT OR FLIGHT !
