Sainsbury's disability helpline

Hello.

I am new here so I hope I am doing this right.

With all the changes with people and places I am having a really hard time. As well as Asperger's with savant traits I have persistent depressive disorder plus PTSD along with degenerative disc disease. It is hard to manage at the best of times. Over the past 2-3 weeks I have suffered days of meltdowns when out vs staying in bed. I have found the local shops a nightmare.

Each month I would put together an online shop with Tesco or Sainsbury's. This, as most of us find, will not be forthcoming anytime soon. After spending a week of trying to get through I was amazed to speak to someone at Sainsbury's this evening. What I have found out might be of use to others so thought best to share here. The chap told me that all slots are being booked for elderly and those with an chronic illness. My above conditions didn't meet the criteria. He recommended I try Click n Collect - he said there wouldn't be a need to join the big queue to get in as it is set for pick up at a certain time slot. He also said someone else can collect it on your behalf. The Click n Collect can not be sent to different stores. I will definitely give it a try. Like so many of us we need the same foods as taste and textures are a big deal to us.

I hope this will help some of you

  • I haven't, but thank you Slight smile I'll take a look.

  • Hey I'm the same, I get PIP enhanced rate and have always had ASDA home delivery to help. ASDA are usually great at helping but this crisis has really made me think about supermarkets - they've done nothing to screen those who book delivery slots besides giving priority to those who are classed extremely vulnerable with my GP says I'm not. Iceland apparently do screen people but I've still had issues getting a slot. As said in another post, after speaking with the Royal Voluntary Society today I hope to work with a volunteer with them to get me in a shop.

  • I've had the same problems trying to get online delivery, my GP says I dont fit the criteria for extremely vulnerable but I'm physically disabled and ASD so rely on having a monthly delivery. Spoke to the Royal Voluntary Society who said someone can go to ASDA for me and drop it off. I'd speak to them and find a local volunteer

  • Thank you, I have watched one of Purple Ella’s videos about what to expect in an assessment. There is another channel called Becoming Autism. I don’t know if you’ve watched anything of those videos? But I find she’s really down to earth, and explains things very well Slight smile

  • I also looked up private assessments and felt they were too expensive. The good news is that the autistic community (both here and elsewhere) have been very welcoming towards me and completely accept self-identification, so I've been able to talk to lots of people and learn more about autism while I wait. Purple Ella's YouTube videos are very helpful; she has a couple on adult autism assessments and what to do while waiting for diagnosis. They might be helpful Slight smile

  • Thank you, yes the group seems really good for advice, and good for just having a general chat about things. I’ve heard from a few people now about the waiting list for an assessment. They say it’s a lengthy process. I did look into a private assessment, but they can be quite expensive, and also they aren’t recognised by certain organisations. But I only really want an assessment for my own peace of mind to be honest. Thanks for your message Slight smile

  • Glad you're finding the forum helpful Slight smile I'm not formally diagnosed yet (I've been on the waiting list a long time), but I've found the group really useful for getting advice and sharing experiences.

  • I’m new here too, but so far I feel like I’ve made a good choice joining Slight smile it feels nice to be able to chat and listen to others in similar situations. I’m only just starting to realise that I’m likely to be on the autism spectrum. I’m actually quite surprised they say you don’t meet the criteria for the service. If you was in my local area, I would gladly pick up your shopping for you. Anyway, it’s good to see you have joined the community chat Slight smile

  • I tried clicking and collect but they said everything was out of stock after I put the order through. How did it go for you

  • It's good that you've found the sunflower lanyards helpful. I've always been too shy to go up and take one - I either convince myself that I don't need one (even though most people's quick top-up shop takes me ages), or I get really worried that I'll be questioned on why I'm wearing it and won't know what to say. It's good to hear that it's working for you Slight smile

Hope you're well - stay safe.

  • That sounds like a good idea - if you can get what you need without having to go into the shop, it's definitely worth saving yourself the stress. Your postman sounds lovely Slight smile You're not going on at all - don't worry Slight smile Haha, thank you! I'm a big fan of ducks X

  • Hello, you are super lucky. Round here they haven't been very helpful and that is with asking for some assistance with proof. The small shops are still not recovered as there are a flats and shared houses so close by. The larger store is a trek. Before this I was slowly getting a little better in my recovery but the last two weeks have really set me back. PTSD on top of everything else is hellish. I have never been able to switch up foods either.

  • Hello,

I do find shopping at my Local store hard enough but now with the Covid 19 precautions I find even harder. My local staff are wonderful as they are aware I am Autistic thanks to the sunflower lanyard i wear so they can help me when I am having issues for example knowing where to stand to keep my distance. It is hard not being able to find the certain foods I eat but the they are slowly getting stock in and I have been able to find alternatives that I can eat so I am happy for that. Sainsburys also offer a one hour slot from 8am for those who are vunerable so i find that helps or go in the afternoon as it is quiet then. Hope this may help. Stay safe all.

  • Hello, many thanks. I am now going to stay away from shops. It will only get worse as the peak hits I fear. The meltdowns floor me so end up in bed for days. I have reached out to my postman who I have gotten to know over the years. He said he would step in if this other friend can't. What a lovely lovely fella. His younger brother is Autistic so he totally understands. Anyway i am going on a bit now. Hahaha. Love your username btw. X

  • Awww no. What a nightmare. I hope you find some help from elsewhere. Let me know how you get on. X

  • Hi! Welcome to the group Slight smile

I know what you mean about the supermarkets - I'm really struggling with them too. Thanks very much for sharing your advice. I'm also having more meltdowns lately; I think it's due to all the change going on at the moment.

I hope you find the forum helpful - I've found that people here are very friendly and willing to listen/offer advice.

  • I did call the Sainsbury's number just now but got through to an answering machine. (I'm so old fashioned, saying answering machine, lol)

But, I have the number on my phone to try tomorrow morning again. Slight smile

  • The only issue with Click-and-Connect with Sainsbury's - here in Northern Ireland - is that the only available shop which accommodates that facility is Derry City - Strand Road. That's over an hour's drive for me. Plus, there's the Sperrins and the roadworks after Dungiven to get to the city. It would fry my brain, big time.

My local shops do deliveries, for on-the spot shopping.

  • Apparently I am not even though I recieved enhanced rate for PIP. I will see how my click n collect adventures go.

Anyway nice of you to reply. Slight smile Before the lockdown hit I was walking 8 different dogs. All sorts of breeds too. Now I am down to 1 every Wednesday. I am finding it really hard to cope as I am missing them all so much.

I am a fan of Titan, Raqib Shaw and a fair number of the Pre Raphaelite greats.

Do share how you get on with your own Pollock creation. X
