exclusion yet again!

My 13 yr old son who has ASD has again been excluded from school for swearing at teacher, he is in mainstream school with statement.

The school has been advised by a specialist that exclusion or detention is not the answer to his problems yet they still find any excuse to send him home. can anyone give me a bit of advice as to where to go from here, the school does not seem to be listening to advice from the professionals. When things go wrong at school the TA is ment to take my son out the situation and get to the bottom of what went wrong but they just get the teacher's side and not my son's.

seem to be banging my head against brick wall with it all, i try and help the school when he plays up but seems to be thrown back in my face.

Sorry for the rant

  • Keep a written record of every meeting and phonecall. If going to meet school staff ask if you can bring a friend.

  • update on meeting.

Teacher's said my son HAD to change form tutors this morning without guidence on change. Was also refused admission to school due to the fact he refused to remove his hat in school. In which he did remove but the teachers just kept contiunally going on about it so he put it back on. so still no further on. awaiting reply from disability and sen at local authority to see what my next step will be, can go on like this.

I questioned the lack of work sent home in which the head of year said that's my fault (i said well it aint mine!) Was going to sort it out (wont hold breath on that one)

My son's form tutor has only been in the school for 2 weeks and just because she has read him file the school think she has enough knowledge to know my son.

Well enough ranting im awaiting for school to ring to let me know the next plan of action on there part.

  • hi again,

recieved a letter from school too but can not understand why they let him stay in school all day then decide at end of day that he was excluded. No doubt will find out tomorrow!

have got support coming with me tomorrow and been going over irregular things with her today to question school in morning hope they ready for it haha

  • Hi there.

This sounds highly irregular to me.

Check the exclusion policy for your local coucil, which will be on their website. In it will be a procedure for informing parents. I think it's supposed to be in writing (it certainly is in my area). They're also supposed to make provision for him whilst he's off - ie work to do (although ours never did).

I hope you get the support you need.

  • hi all

just an update, found out today the school has not done my son's annual statement renewal which was due last october and i got copy of it in november.

Have my son's support worker coming into school with me to help with getting to the bottom of the problems they have with him.

The incident that happening resulting in this exclusion happened first lesson of day and my son was able to carry on the whole day at school before school calling at  me at 4pm (school finishes at 3pm) to tell me he excluded for 2 days not sure if this is right?

will let you all know how get on tomorrow.

  • hi all thanks for info, school have agreed to me having son's school records but got a feeling things will go missing from it, so spent the afternoon gathering the paperwork i have. also contacted the nas education helpline awaiting call back.

Going to look at site now jim v thanks

  • Hiya,

Just wanted to suggest that you may want to arrange a chat with the Education Rights service directly. That's our specialist line for advice about education provision.

You can see more about the service here -

  • hi hellsbells,

Thanks for reply i have requested his school records, We have regular meetings with the school but what they say they will do doesn't seem to happen. I think they dont want him in school and they are pushing me to the limit so i withdraw him.

I am looking into taking matter further and will contact the NAS helpline for more advice, as seems like never ending battle. I know recently the school had an ofsted inspection and my son was excluded the 2 days ofsted was in school (coincidence I think)

Thanks for advice will get onto getting things sorted!

  • Hi there.

I really sympathise - this happened to my son on a number of occasions.

Firstly, get support from the NAS helpline. They were fantastic with us - really helpful.

Secondly, from my own experience I can suggest the following.

Are his exclusions formal - ie on his school record, or are they "just" sending him home for the rest of the day so they don't have to deal with him any more? The latter is NOT allowed. My son's first school did this regularly until we eventually realised and challenged them on it.

If the exclusions are formal, then again, you should challenge them, but via the local authority. If the exclusions are directly related to his disability, as my son's were, and particularly if they, the school are not following an agreed procedure, then again, they are not allowed. It's against the DDA to exclude when it's directly related to the disability. We challenged our school via the LEA and were successful in not only getting the exclusion taken off his record, but also a change in attitude, as I think they realised they had to find other ways of dealing with my son's admittedly challenging behaviour. They also then started to put more in place to support him.

Schools will often play on the fact that they seem to hold the power, so you need to get the support to take it back. My son's head teacher told me he had no choice but to exclude him - which was a lie, which he later admitted to me. He quoted the LEA's policy on exclusion to me, but I'd read it and knew it was up to the head's discretion as to whether or not he excluded my son.

Sorry to use so many of my own examples here - I really hope you can get a change of attitude from your school. Professional support for you is the best thing and the helpline should be a good start. Also, is there anyone else who can argue your case at meetings? Our Spectrum Support worker and Ed. Psych are both brilliant and make us feel we're not alone.

    Good luck!
