Advice would be appreciated

I hope someone could advise me.

My son, aged 9 (nearly 10) has recently been diagnosed with ASD.  He has had problems at school since the age of three and it has took this long for his diagnosis.

For the last 6 months he seems to need very little sleep, sometimes can be 4am before we get to sleep.  His behaviour is also seriously going downhill, he seems to have meltdowns nearly everyday.  Over the last week he has attacked four different pupils in his class.  All of them provoked him in some way and he retaliated.  Can the school exclude him for his behaviour?  We have been waiting nearly 7 months for the Autistic Outreach team to come into school to help him.

He's in mainstream school and I'm starting to wonder whether it would be better for him to be in a special school.

Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Hi everyone  am new and just wanted some advice. Recently my daughter had tests done in school for what they thought was dyscalculia . the test come back and it was a brain memory processing disorder i don't no much about this and I want to no if this is an autism spectrum .thank you

  • My son is on these tablets believe me when I say it was a very hard decision and not a decision that was taken lightly Im not sure what I was expecting my son to be like once he had taken this tablet but the way he is after having them is nothing like I expected they don't knock him out or turn him into a zombie they take around a couple of hours to work all they do is help him relax and once he's in this relaxed state he just nods off which before was not possible he sometimes does wake through the night (not every night ) but he soon falls back to sleep so he's goes to sleep at around 9pm and gets up at around 7am it has helped so much as he's getting enough sleep now his out burst of anger have definitely decreased which means us as a family are all getting the sleep we need between taking these and his new school also not forgetting the hard work he's put in life is better and calmer for the whole family willmum does you son have a statement through school

    Hi

It's good to hear from Spencer02 that things can be sorted out well - we hear lots of stories about how things never get resolved.

Melatonin is sometimes prescribed for sleep problems with autism see some of the articles in this search http://community.autism.org.uk/search/node/melatonin As I understand it, it helps re-establish a night/day rhythm and it isn't like conventional sleeping tablets that "put you to sleep". Discuss it with your GP who will be able to advise properly.

  • Let me know how you get on if you have to phone your local education department and tell them you think he's being treated unfairly also as far as the sleep goes speak to his doctor I know you probably don't want your son on sleeping tablets but it really does help more sleep less out burst

  • Thank you so much that helps a lot.  Think that's probably the best way to go, pull him out xx

  • My boys is now 10 he started having problems in mainstream at the age of 7 last year in September I pulled my boy out of the school he was in and refused to send him back which made the authorities listen he now goes to a special school for kids with problems and it's the best thing I ever did he's come on so much he's happy again these schools set up individual plans for each child as every child is different something mainstream don't seem to understand tonight my lad is away for the night with his new school something that would not of happened at the old one sendi him to this school has taught my lad it's ok to be different it was the best thing I ever did as now I have a happy little man
