caf is a good start but really go for the statement as this opens more doors in the future. Also it will look @ ur child's non educational needs - socialising outside of school, trips/short breaks/respite for them - giving u some time back etc.
kind regards,

Hi, just wanted to say I have been there and won
. My son is 5 years old who had just been diagnosed with A.S.D and had been excluded from his school 4 times.
Their is hope out there, I went to my local Education board and had a chat with the Specaial Needs Team. I told them I had concerns with my son's education and felt that all of his need were not being met. I battled with his school and told them I was writing to the education board to request my son to be staemented. Which as a parent you can do the only promblem is if the school do not agree but they have to explain why and you can apeal against their desion. (Sorry not a good speller)
Ask for a C.A.F (Common Assement Framwork). This is to get all the people involved to meet up and you are the person who is in chsrge and can ask question and for anything to be done.
Also talk to the school and the policy about every child matters which the government set out as a white paper. Not a lot of people know about the policy which has five aims in it. That all children are entitled to Being healthy, Staying safe, Enjoying and achieving (in school) and the is more but do not want to be boring you with the information lol
.
Every education authority had parent Partnership and they are very good and can push for more to be done and tell you what help your child should be getting.
Good luck, hope I have helped in some way and keep going
.
Hi, just wanted to say youre not alone , we've had ongoing problems with school. Our 9 year old has ASD, sensory processing disorder and dyspraxia. Like you we also asked for statement assessment but we requested it to the LEA ourselves not through school but they still declined to carryout an assessment so were off to tribunal.
We have come across our parent partnership group and in wales there called SNAP they will act as advocate and help in this sort of dispute and know the system inside out. The LEA should point you in their direction.
We asked our school if our daughter could have her own area to eat in because the noise and sight of other kids food was distressing to her and they reluctantly agreed and things are much better for her now, we did have to mention that we felt they were breaching the disabilities act as they were not adressing our duaghters disabilities.
Not sure if anybody has introduced you to the ASD outreach team, I think that you can contact them through school or the LEA. they should be able to go in to school and make recomendations to school to help your nine year old have a better time in there. I guess I'd probebly speak to the headteatcher and try to speak to the educational psychologist about re assessing what help is needed as well as speaking with the local parent partnership.
best of luck and keep battling.
I have just been speaking to another parent in our school who has just got a date to take them to a tribunal. She has been given a list of the special needs children in the school (not names just years) and it seems that out of 24 special needs children only 1 has a statement. The parent who is going to the tribunal is the one with the statement and she is taking them to a tribunal because they are not complying with the terms of the statement.
Does this explain why the school have blocked both my attempts at getting a statement? I am really thinking now that the school have a deliberate policy of stopping statements.
Welcome to the community Ming.
It sounds like you are having a difficult time at the moment. You may find it useful to contact our Education Rights Service:
http://www.autism.org.uk/educationrights
They may be able to help you in finding ways past the current difficulties and in looking at the statementing process.
Hopefully this will give you some starting points and some other members will be along soon to share their experiences and suggestions.
Do let us know how you get on.
