I don't know where to go from here

My 9 year old DS has ASD and has sensory processing disorder. He attends mainstream school but has always struggled. This term he is really struggling for example last week he got upset because his usual seat was not available at lunch time and he had to move desks in his classroom so he cut up his polo shirt with a pair of scissors. Every morning he asks us not to send him to school. I have had a long chat with him and he says that the crowds of children and the constant noise are too much for him. Over the past 2/3 years we have had various meetings with the school about this but as much as they say they are dealing with things they still do things like take his figet toy off him because he is fidgetting. We have tried twice to get him a statement but each time the school have said he is ok and we have been refused an assessment for a statement. We are at the point now where we feel bad sending him to school but just do not know where to go from here or what to do. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

  • Hi, just wanted to say youre not alone , we've had ongoing problems with school. Our 9 year old  has ASD, sensory processing disorder and dyspraxia. Like you we also asked for statement assessment but we requested it to the LEA ourselves not through school but  they still declined to carryout an assessment so were off to tribunal.

We have come across our parent partnership group and in wales there called SNAP they will act as advocate and help in this sort of dispute and know the system inside out. The LEA should point you in their direction.

We asked our school if our daughter could have her own area to eat in because the noise and sight of other kids food was distressing to her and they reluctantly agreed and things are much better for her now, we did have to mention that we felt they were breaching the disabilities act  as they were not adressing our duaghters disabilities.

Not sure if anybody has introduced you to the ASD outreach team, I think that you can contact them through school or the LEA. they should be able to go in to school and make recomendations to school to help your nine year old have a better time in there. I guess I'd probebly speak to the headteatcher and try to speak to the educational psychologist about re assessing what help is needed as well as speaking with the local parent partnership.

best of luck and keep battling.
