I don't know where to go from here

My 9 year old DS has ASD and has sensory processing disorder. He attends mainstream school but has always struggled. This term he is really struggling for example last week he got upset because his usual seat was not available at lunch time and he had to move desks in his classroom so he cut up his polo shirt with a pair of scissors. Every morning he asks us not to send him to school. I have had a long chat with him and he says that the crowds of children and the constant noise are too much for him. Over the past 2/3 years we have had various meetings with the school about this but as much as they say they are dealing with things they still do things like take his figet toy off him because he is fidgetting. We have tried twice to get him a statement but each time the school have said he is ok and we have been refused an assessment for a statement. We are at the point now where we feel bad sending him to school but just do not know where to go from here or what to do. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

  • Hi, just wanted to say I have been there and won . My son is 5 years old who had just been diagnosed with A.S.D and had been excluded from his school 4 times.

Their is hope out there, I went to my local Education board and had a chat with the Specaial Needs Team. I told them I had concerns with my son's education and felt that all of his need were not being met. I battled with his school and told them I was writing to the education board to request my son to be staemented. Which as a parent you can do the only promblem is if the school do not agree but they have to explain why and you can apeal against their desion. (Sorry not a good speller)

Ask for a C.A.F (Common Assement Framwork). This is to get all the people involved to meet up and you are the person who is in chsrge and can ask question and for anything to be done.

Also talk to the school and the policy about every child matters which the government set out as a white paper. Not a lot of people know about the policy which has five aims in it. That all children are entitled to Being healthy, Staying safe, Enjoying and achieving (in school) and the is more but do not want to be boring you with the information lol .

Every education authority had parent Partnership and they are very good and can push for more to be done and tell you what help your child should be getting.

Good luck, hope I have helped in some way and keep going .
