Has anyone been on a help! scotland parent course?

Hi,

I was given a info pack from my sons psychologist a cupple of weeks ago when she gave me my sons diagnosis, a dual one of aspergers and dyspraxia. He was diagnosed with dyspraxia at aged 4 and hypotonia at 18months. In the pack I have come accross info on courses run by the NAS for parents dealing with a new diagnosis and was wondering if anyone had been on a course and if it helped them.

My son is 16 so i sort of feel I have muddled through on my own till now and would like to take advantage of any support I can now find. Its not been fun on my own. My husband is great but works long hours and doesnt understand our son and most things I deal with on my own.

  • Thanks very much moonraker. Hope you are now getting the right support for you and your son and the formal diagnosis helps you,I was expecting it but it still sent me on a rollercoaster of emotions. Im just feeling a bit confused at the moment because I keep looking up information and then just finding that theres more I need to know! and there is lots of things that I thought was to do with his dyspraxia and its actualy due to the AS. It sounds like the courses will be very good for me.

    Thanks again

  • Hi Sam

My 14 year old son has only just this week got a formal diagnosis of Autism but I went with my sister to a help Scotland course in March and we found it very, very useful. I would highly recommend you go, it's a chance to meet other parents, get advice (or be directed to the right advice) and lots of information.

  • thanks a lot GG im never sure when you have an "expert" smiling at you and saying you should do this course whether its more for professionals or thoese of us dealing with it day to day. Its always better to hear it does help from someone going through it.

    thanks again

  • Hi there, my oldest son has a dx of Autism and ADHD.  My hubby and I went on the Help Scotland course last October and we found it really helpful.  It was nice to meet some other parents too who were experiencing (or had experienced) similar situations to us.

    Totally recommend it.
