where to go, mum to 19 year old.

Hi all,

I am mum to a 19 year old male. He's always showed autistic traits but I have always been able to help him navigate through life. We spend most of the year in Egypt as he is half Egyptian. Now at 19 I feel I should get him officially tested. I have read it will take years for an appointment on the NHS but is a privately sought test as good what is the wait time and cost.

Looking forward to help on this new path I have chosen for him

  • At 19, and resident for most of the year abroad, I am not sure he'd be entitled to NHS treatment.  However, there are exceptions to this, and I am sure you're aware of the status.  If he's classed as an ex-pat he is not liable to NHS care free at the point of use.

As he is an adult, he'd need to either make an appointment with a UK GP if he is entitled and registered at a surgery - and he'd also be entitled to make use of the right-to-choose procedures which effectively shorten the waiting times considerably.

Whatever and however this happens - he is now an adult - and it is for him to consent to testing, and to apply for assessment.

Private assessments for Autism are considered to be much the same standard as those given by the NHS and are normally accepted onto a patient's NHS record.  They normally cost around £2000 with a comparatively short waiting time.
