Tantrums

If a child with Autism is having a tantrum rather than a meltdown, can you talk to them during the tantrum?  My seven year old has tantrums but I don’t know if talking to him helps as he seems to get more angry when we try to talk to him, explain. in length why he can’t do or have something or offer alternatives.

  • I've found that asking questions, particularly those that don't relate to the cause of the upset, is a good way to help my child when they're upset and overwhelmed.

It helps re-engage their rational thinking and has a calming effect.
