Adult Autism Assessment.

Hi, I'm new here. My daughter is 21 years old and has struggled all her life with her mental health.  Just recently she was referred for Autism testing to be done, but the waiting list is 36 months, which is to long.

Can anyone help me with any information for my daughter to be seen quicker or for her to be seen privately?

My daughter tried to commit suicide last year, she has depression and anxiety. Our GP suspects my daughter was misdiagnosed as a toddler for Autism. She had all the traits for Autism, but I was told she was just "delayed".

Thank you.

  • i dont like gps or the system to be fair...

my gp had my referal for assessment just waiting on his desk for 3 years i thought he sent it but he didnt, i contacted them recently and they acted dumb and said oh its still here we havent sent it yet, do you want us to send it? lol ....so yeah now my wait starts after 3 years of waiting on the gps being incompetant not even sending it.... i hate the nhs system, it needs a massive overhaul.

  • I'm sorry that your daughter is struggling so much and I do hope you can get her an appointment sooner than 36 months.

I didn't go down the route of an NHS diagnosis. To be honest I didn't think my GP would take me seriously as I've got to my early 60s without knowing I'm autistic. And I'm also aware that the waiting lists are very long and I just didn't feel that was a wait I could deal with. Like Ladybug I've also had a private assessment, which was earlier this week and will get my formal diagnosis later this month. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to mention who it was with in the open forum but I would be happy to let you know the details if you want to send me a private message.  The cost wasn't as much as I anticipated and is the best money I've spent in a good long while!

  • I went for private assessment and I’d highly recommend the service i used- feel free to dm me if you would like information about it (I just prefer not to write too much on public forum that could link to my location etc..)

  • I'm going through the Right To Choose route as I was informed of a 3yr wait via local NHS.  I have my assessment on Thursday after around a 3 month application process and wait.  Highly recommend thThumbsup route to give you some hope of peace of mind Thumbsup Good luck

  • Hi. I'm sorry to here about your daughter. I was very reluctant to do it on principle, but in the end I weighed up the impact a long wait would have on me and my family and decided to go private. It was a difficult decision, but I'm glad I did it.  The whole process - form filling, history, multiple questionnaires, multiple interviews, report and follow up took about 5 weeks.

  • I'm so sorry to hear your daughter is in such distress, this must be hugely worrying.

What I did is tell my GP I would like the 'right to choose' and asked them to refer me on to Psychiatry UK. This shortens the wait list down significantly. I started my referral last summer and my assessment is next week, but other people on this site have said that they were seen within 6-7 months of referral using this system.

Try the above out and see how it goes - and massive good luck to you both.
