My sons school are useless

Hi I wonder if anyone can help me my son got diagnosed about  six weeks ago with autism and generalised hypermobility and motor coordination difficults we have known from a baby he was a bit diffrent and then he went to an amazing nursery (tanglewoods in chelmsford) who put us on the right path to get him diagnosed and they went out of there way to help him learn and understand the world around him and he came on so far tantrums reduced, he tried to be more independent, stopped wetting him self ect and then he went to school! Now we are back to square one and his teacher is telling me his no diffrent to any other children they haven't got him on a action plan I asked almost a month a go to see their senco, I'm still waiting. I went for stay and play and he was siting in a diffrent direction to the class and froze when another child took his toy, I looked threw the window and my child was walking around in circles looking lost and confused while the other children were at there desks getting changed for pe i am beging to not want to take him there anymore as they don't seem very intressed in what his diagnoses report has said I don't no where to go from here we are at breaking point  any advise would be great. Thanks from a very stressed mum :-/

  • I am considering moving him but I'm worried the move would just be another set back without a statement and all so he has fainally been talking about a boy he goes bug hunting with at lunch he has never made real friends before so it's lovely to hear even if he is known as green coat boy lol.

  • Hi - gd that things seem to be moving in the right direction for you.  Saying that, do you think this particular school is the right one for your child, even when with the statement/support put in place.  It's their attitude that would bug me

  • thank you for your advise I feel like I have got somewhere today at last.I am referring him my self for a statement (didn't no I could do that thank you)and no I hadnt wrote a letter to the senco but had spoken to his teacher and office a few times about a meeting but I refused to leave today untill I had either an appointment with senco or head to tell me why  not after a month of waiting. I now have an appointment for the 4th And have arranged for families infocus to also attended. The worring  part is when I told the teacher about  some children can hold them self together at school she said she  knew as she worked with autistic kids before moving to this school  and is now telling me she didn't say he hasn't got problems just  that all the kids are struggling with the same issues I just wish I had of said yes but they can ask for help but I will now put it in a book with all the other things I want to ask and say hopefully he will get the help he needs now    :)

  • I would second what Lou31 says.  I hear this too much, and am in fact going through a similar situation with my eldest daughter at the moment.  Many schools want to ignore what is right in front of them and only care about the academics not the overall wellbeing of the child.  I would email or print out and hand the teacher and the SENCo a copy of the NAS information about different behaviour between school and home (http://community.autism.org.uk/discussions/health-wellbeing/diagnosis-assessment/different-behaviour-between-school-home) because behaviour doesn't have to take place at school to be caused by school and not all worrying behaviour is obvious either.  They can't only take notice if a child is acting out aggressively and ignore the passive and highly anxious ones.  Request a meeting, and they can't shie away from discussing it.  Look on www.ipsea.org.uk as they have lots of good information and model letters.

  • It makes me so cross to hear things like this happening!  What right have the staff there, who don't sound like they know your son, to undermine his diagnosis like this?!  Honestly, there will probably be someone along who can give you better advice than me.  I've been lucky as my son goes to a very supportive school.  However, if it were me, I'd be ringing twice a day and emailing at least once a day until i got an appropriate response and a very prompt meeting with the SENCO, Head and class teacher.  (ie I'd make a nuisance of myself until they were so fed up with me they'd do anything to shut me up Wink)  If there is still no response, I might have a look at who the Governor for SEN is at your school.  You don't mention a statement and I assume as he is not even on an action plan they have no intention of applying.  If this is the case, I'd apply myself.

Seriously, don't give up.  I hate to hear of parents getting to 'breaking point'.  Put all that negative energy into fighting for your sons education.  Good luck!
