Hi my son is ASD and went to special nursery. He is now 8 year4 in mainstream primary has a full statement with 1-1 he has been in this school since reception. The first year was awful and he only did half days. The next few years have been better but he is falling behind badly I feel that the school have just put him in that so called 'SEN' box ! they say he is doing well for him , but being on level working towards level 1a for literacy when he is in year 4 ( he is a bright boy but his sensory difiiculties affect his learning). he is also struggling socially has no friends is not invited for tea or parties etc .. He is not able to access after school clubs either ( they use the health and safety flag lol) They are not using adequate resources there are other sen children in his class none of which have statements im well aware my sons 1-1 s are used to help them too. I have spoken to school in person and in writing suggesting resources etc to no avail. I gave school a copy of the circle of friends resources they said they did not think it necessary. I suggested using social stories and other resources they did eventually after 8 months purchase a speech and language book thet the SLD suggested. i had to remind them 3 times. The head is also the senco its a small school and has a lovely atmosphere but the heads main aim from what I see over the last year is getting the school to outstanding ready for the next ofsted. My son I have been told accesses the whole curriculum in class and no longer needs a workstation it appears they use no autism resources with his learning at all and he is just learning with the whole class which is not ideal due to his sensory difficulties. i think he is dispraxic his writing is dreadful his spelling still phonic he cannot ride a bike yet has lots of falls. He is quite able with maths on level 2b.
To cut a long story short I visited an amazing school about 35 min drive from our home. We are on Glos Warks border my son is in Glos school but with Warks statement.
I could immediately see on visiting the school and who I met they would be able to provide a more rounded and inclusive education for my son. his needs are not being met in mainstream school. Can anyone give me advice on how I go about getting him into a special school I assume it will be very difficult but I want the best for my son ?
