Homeschooled Child Diagnosis Pathway

Our middle child (8) has ASD and possibly ADHD traits but no diagnosis. For the last two years he's been homeschooled (for reasons unrelated to ASD/ADHD). When he was at school his teachers did have concerns but nothing formal came of it.

We'd like to return him to a formal school setting but have concerns about sending him back without a diagnosis - he's older now and his behaviour may be more problematic to an unsympathetic teacher.

Are there any recommended pathways for diagnosis of homeschooled children? We have considered private diagnosis but most tests seem to be one session so we have some doubts on how in depth the test will be and how much a private diagnosis will help inform the school or the NHS going forwards.

  • I think a prvate diagnosis would be wise as then you have a stronger case for support in his new school.  Now most schools have lots of children with ASD so I would not be too worried.  Primary schools are generally v good, caring etc and ae the best in Europe (unlike secondary schools).  Its best to get things moving ASAP, ideally before September if possible.

I am now tutoring (including online tutoring) ASD pupils.  I have run ASD provisions in a similar role to a SENCO for over 20 years and home schooled my son. [Removed by Moderator due to breaking rules 7 and 2 of the Online Community. More info here: https://community.autism.org.uk/p/rules].
