Mum looking for support

I'm mum to a 5 year old boy, today he's not autistic (this is my rediculous way of thinking thats getting me through ) but on Tuesday I'm having a post assessment meeting with his assessment team and I fully expect him to be diagnosed as they've all but said already.

I was looking around online to see if there are any local support groups, more for me selfishly at the moment as I feel really conflicted and sad about all this. There are so many different websites though, has anyone had any luck finding local groups of people to chat to about this stuff?

  • Thanks it's good to hear things get better. I'm definitely guilty of agonising over whether each problem is asd related or just cos he's 5!

The friends and family thing is tricky, because (and I know this is my problem really not theirs) but I never like people's reactions, I don't like hearing 'yes I thought there was something strange about your child' because then I get defensive but on the other hand I hate it when they say 'I don't think he has that, he's just young' because clearly the medical professionals know what they're doing and we haven't gone through all this just because I fancied a label for him.

Im a bit prickly about it I guess

  • Hi moon mum I have a 4 year old boy in a similar situation he was on the waiting list for a diagnosis but now it’s all been put on hold. I felt the same as you but it does get easier yeah I still have my off days when things are hard but i just think it’s who they are sometimes we put all there habits down to autism but many it’s just there personalities aswell. It does help to talk family or friends maybe? Just keep telling yourself it does get easier I promise

  • Hi Moonmum

My recommendation is to remember that the diagnosis does not change who your son is. What it might do is help you, and others, better understand his needs and support him to fulfill his potential.

Local support may be patchy but look under "local offer" on your local authority's website. That should list all the support and services available in the area. If there's nothing listed there you could contact the "disabled children's team" in the social services department.

  • Thanks Lorraine, I've been having a good read through. Am up most of the night with a newborn.. Upside.. Lots of time for reading.

my sons been assessed. We were due to get the results just when lockdown started so obviously that meeting couldn't go ahead, so it's a phone appointment now next week. Im rubbish on the phone and I know I'm going to be left with a million questions and noone to talk to really with all this going on . Really glad I found this site.

  • Hello Moonmum

, While you wait for the assessment team to see your son, you may find it useful to have a look at our autism page on our website which has a vast amount of information. The page contains information on the basics of what the autism spectrum is, how it's defined in a clinical sense, and the characteristics of autism: http://www.autism.org.uk/about/what-is/asd.aspx

    I hope this helps.

    Best Wishes
