school not listening!!!!

Spoke to my 2 lil uns ep today, she phoned to discuss a possible school for Bounce (youngest one!), for some reson she seems more eager to get bounce into a different mainstream school with a asd unit (from the ones I have seen so far I am not impressed!!).

After discussing a fair bit in detail she pointed out that some recommendations have not been taken upon by the school even though they will help Bounce tremendously in mainstream school. After havinga ABC assesment done while he was in nursery some of his triggers were identified. School discussed them with me and we agreed that these should be prevented to avoid any incidents, these didnt happen at all!!!! School actually aggravated them badly and this resulted in Bounce being excluded twice in a matter of weeks. He was put on a re-integration programme which made matters worse and didnt go back to full time till last week of term!!

He is now in reception and to find out that important advice is not being implemented is shocking. They are refusing to have him full time or even till after dinner, he only gets 2hrs and 45 mins in total.  They mentioned 2 weeks before half term that they are going to employ a permanent 1:1 for Bounce so he can go full time but on last day of half term was told he will still be part-time for  weeks into new term and will be reviewed again.

I know now that they are just waiting or his statement to come so he will be moving to a new school and they wont have to deal with him. Knowing that I had a neighbour who's autistic and went to that school and has severe autism and stayed full time and had no issues and that Bounce is not has bad has him makes me severely question what the school is playing at!!!

I am finding it very hard with all the running up and down the school 3 times a day (its a mile and a half away!) and dealing with my other kids whon have s/n and supporting them.

I just dont know which way to turn, with the demands of all my 7 kids and their additional needs (5 with s/n) and getting my youngest 2 statemented and dealing with everyone is just so draining I barely have 5 minutes to sit down and have a drink in peace without having to run around dealing with everyone. I dont have any support at present just need some advice on how to deal with one very frustraing ignorant school!!!!

  • I did contact my MP several months ago about another educational issue and still not resolved!!

Things at kids school are becoming very strained and even with PP trying to speak to them (which they are refusing), we are not getting anywere!!!

However I did get some good news yesterday from SENARS that both my lil uns draft statements are gonna be written in the next 2 weeks (already 6 weeks late!) and with the fact that I have already looked at schools I am hoping they will be out of there sooner than I thought :) (x me fingers n toes! :)  )

  • Whenever I come across a parent with a problem like this - delays to statements etc I always tell them the same thing. Write an email to your MP. I have known of one case where a parent had been told her child's statement (3 years out of date) would take at least another 6 months. She wrote to her MP. 2 weeks later it had been sorted.

ANother parent had not been getting respite. LA said he was too old to start. They wrote to their MP. 3 weeks later they had respite.

Try it and please post as to what happens

  • Hi crystal 12, Even though I have had a chance to look for alternative eduaction for bounce and bumblebee, I was told today that we are looking at a possible 4+ month delay on thier statements :(.

They are not able to cope for much longer and its only a matter of time before somethink pops up. Have warned school that if they keep aggravating him dont expect a sorry from me just a 'told ya so'. Parent partneship have been trying to get hold of school and from our meeting today he is very eager to speak to them. He is also looking into alternative education placements for all 3 of my kids there has things have got really bad there betwen us.

My elder 2 have MLD, one of them has epilepsy and the other has (from my opinion) autistic traits , 3rd one is dyslexic and also has self esteem and confidence issues (and can be a ryte pain!!), Bumblebee (7yrold) he has global development delay, MLD, social and communication difficulties. I have been referred to sw before but get the same response 'they dont fit the criteria'. It does amaze me what does. Has they get older their difficulties become more visible and difficult to deal with.

My elder 2 had a assesment for a sw a while ago and all they done was refer to differnet services and said bye bye. No one seems to give a dam these days even their support workers are working less with them now. Eldest only goes to college twice a week and spends the rst of the week in the house.

I have tried to rest but with my kids and all the running around its just impossible, even the chance to go to my doctor is impossible (and its just at the bottom of the road!!!). Will one day (not sure when ) get a chance to look after my self .

    thanks :)

  • hi again - looks like you're making progress getting Bounce a school - hope it all works out well for him and you.  I'm at a loss to understand why you haven't got a sw.  Their criteria must be pretty restrictive??  If you ever get a bit of time you should pursue that again.  You can get a carer's assessment - ask your GP. In my area it's contracted out to a charity who come to see you.  A carer's assessment should state what you need to continue your caring role - that might force social service's hand.  I hope your foot and ankles improve soon.  I know it's so difficult but look after yourself, including your foot!

  • hi crystal12, school is def not commited to him at all, they dont bother talking to me in general and def not bother to answer any of my questions (so annoying :(  ).  The ASD units I saw had safety issues and since Bounce is always escaping (and has tried on numerous times at home) and is a climber they just didnt meed his needs. One of them I saw wouldnt even let me see the mainstram area where he will be spending some of his time. This put me off and no decent excuse was given.

I have found 2 schools that am just making some final enquires to see how they will be able to help/support Bounce before I name a school on his draft statement. EP is helping with this has well has she is speaking to EP attached to both schools to seeif he fits their criteria.

Bounce hates classrooms full of children and is starting to manage with oly a few in their for now. School are wuite adament that he starts to play with or alongside other kids (he dont even do this at home, and gets very distraught when siblings try) so not sure how it will happen in school. I have dealt with special schools in the past so know a fair bit and Bounce will def do better in one that is able to give the right help and support he needs. The class sizes etc are just ideal for him to cope with.

I dont have a sw at all, never have had for any of my kids disabilities (for some reson they have never fitted the criteria!!).

I wouldnt mind at all if i just had one whole day to myself but dont even get that since kids timetables have changed at college and other son has started college. (eldest 3 have s/n and need support within home etc!)

On top of all this I have injured my foot and am in agony has the amount of walking I am doing (over 10 miles a day) it has put a strain on my ankles has well and in constant pain :( .

Just nothink seems to be going ryte at all and once on problem/issue is solved another 3/4 come along!!! :(

  • hi tiredeyes - what a carry on, you must be worn out with everything you have to do every day.  The school doesn't sound appropriate for your child, going by what you say.  It doesn't sound like it's committed to helping him.  So, however good it may be for children without asd, it will continue to be below standard in meeting your child's needs.  But you also say you haven't been impressed by asd units at other schools.  What put you off these units?  Does the school he's presently at have an asd unit, or is it your ep's advice that he needs such a unit?  An appropriate educational placement is so important for Bounce.  There may be financial reasons the school is taking into account, but that's just a thought.  My child always went to an autism-specific school.  I do not have 1 single regret that he was educated in that way.  I don't know Bounce so cannot comment at all about how he'd do in mainstream with appropriate support.  The bottom line is that he needs a 1-1, as far as I can see from your post, who understands him + understands in depth how his asd affects him.  If the school maintains its present position then you can complain to :  the school governors, the Chair and/or Director of Children + Families Dept at your council offices, your local councillor or your MP.  There'll be advice on the nas site you can access.  I presume you've got a sw.  How is your sw helping you?  I hope you can get thing sorted out soon.  Even a little bit more time to yourself would be a luxury, I imagine.  I hope it comes soon and you can make the most of it.  bw
