5 year old son with ASD no volume control

Hello,

We have issues with our son making very loud noises, screeching and screaming when he is excited, playing with toys or watching tv. He will do this constantly throughout the day and it is causing issues with our neighbours who are not very understanding. Speech and language therapy think that it is a sensory stimulation for him and that perhaps he’s not aware that he is doing it. When you ask him to be quiet he gets quite upset or angry. 

We were wondering if anyone else has experienced this and how we can help to manage it?

  • Speech and language are probably right sounds like a vocal stim. I have 3 kids at home with no volume control and they each try to over shout the other so it gets very loud! 

    As other people have suggested trying to change the stim rather than stop it is better, sounds silly but have you tried encouraging humming? This way he is still getting a stimulation of the vocal cords and as others have suggested possibly earphones for audio stimulation. 

    As for your neighbor's I know its difficult but your son is allowed to make as much noise as he likes during the day and they will have to learn a bit of patience.

    Thank you so much for your advice! I have thought about letting him listen to music with earphones but as with your own son I don’t think he would like to keep them on for very long. A social story has been suggested but we are still not quite sure as to whether he realises he is doing it or has any control.

  • hi , Im actually dealing with a same problem at the moment. Thats a second time this happend. First it was december 2018- last for about
    1-2 months then disspaer.Now is back again, stronger ,longer and louder. My son is 6 years old with ASD spectrum , non verbal.When it happend
    firts time he catch cold so I thought its his reaction for sore throw or something.then the cold past but screems remain , they where that lound that he lost his voice .
    Ive contacted few specialists we have worked before . So thats what they suggegted:
    - it could be sensory need due to being non verbal. my son often screems to objects like , toys , fridge , floor looking for some sound reflection .
    - it could be pre talking stage
    - it could be his way to talk.

    Now , to help him with that ive been told to try:
    -giving him some tubes (some wiskeys are sold in metal tube , or any other paper or metal ones) so he
    can scream inside and get the stronger sound reflection.
    -Getting a toy what modifing voices
    -Repeting his screems.
    -Good quality headphones and high frequent music (Mozart) to give a good sensory action

    Ive tried it all ,so here is what ive noticed.
    Tubes are worked good but it doesnt take away problem . it gives him better sensory experience so his screams not come that often and
    are not so loud. Toys completly useless as he wont play anything like this , same as the headphones.Aaron not keen on holding something around
    his head for longer then a minute. Best solution ive found is taking him for a longer drive , usually about a hour and listing to Mozart music
    almost on the full blast. It might have sound stupid but it makes a different.He looks very happy while driving and after he is very energized.
    High frequent music over 400hz must works on his brain giving
    some sensory experience that makes him scream much less.

    Hope that give you some ideas.
