Recent diagnosis - advice on report please

Hiya

my 16 yr old us recently received a diagnosis of ASD. I’ve been asked to read through the draft report before meeting to discuss it. I’m confused as to how the report details so much background information and family information - for example the fact I had post natal depression and that I split up from his dad temporarily. Is this normal or can I request for this to be taken out? I don’t understand how it can be useful for people working with my son to read this ?

thank you!!!

  • Thank you all so much for this. I will ask for an edited version for school - the full report has already gone to the GP. Thank you all for taking the time to reply - was feeling a bit lost and you have really helped me - thank you again x

  • Oh it’s horrible isn’t it, the diagnostic report? Really too personal and extremely uncomfortable to read. I totally freaked out after reading mine. I found it excruciatingly painful to read how ‘impaired’ a professional perceives me as being, though I do also realise that is the point and the intention of the assessment and the report.

  • yeah, my (private adult) full report basically included everything i had said during the 4hr appt. It was incredibly detailed and personal. She recommended I keep that just for me (although it was sent to my GP) and gave me a 2 page letter for employers etc.

  • I know that my assessment/diagnosis report was extremely thorough. They have to go through every potential cause of symptoms throughout your entire life, in order to rule out other causes before giving a diagnosis of ASD. So it is an essential and relevant part of the report. However, it might be possible to request an abbreviated version of the report for use at school or work.

  • It doesn't appear to me to be relevant either, except that some of the details of the family history could have caused depression and anxiety to which someone autistic would be particularly prone, and some of which may have spilled over and have a lasting effect even long after it had been forgotten. There is also the possibility that these have been mentioned in order to dismiss them from the reasons for any problems your son has had.

I was told that the report I received was for my benefit. I could ask for an 'edited' report for my GP, and I also  had a separate 'appendix' with useful information for my employer on adjustments that should be considered.  My diagnosis was done privately however

In my experience clinical reports always contain details which seem hardly relevant, whatever condition they are about.  Make notes on the draft report of things you find irrelevant and discuss the reasons why they are in there.  And do not be afraid to ask for some things to be removed.

  • Hi

I'm not entirely sure why that would be included, I could understand on medical notes maybe but not on a report going to other people,

I know that some people on here have had reports amended for workplace disclosure so they don't contain sensitive information I would assume that you can have this taken out as it is your medical history not your sons?

Sorry I can't be more help still waiting for assessment for my daughter so can't really judge what happens after!
