Cycling

Do you like cycling but have a friend or family member who can't?  Why not try tandeming?  We've been tandeming with our elder daughter, who has Severe Learning Difficulties and Autism, for the last 5 years, so if you would like some advice and how to borrow a tandem for free, then please contact me.

  • We now have tandems spreading all over the the country.  They are free to borrow.  Most of our borrowers so far are on the Autistic Spectrum, so check out our website www.charlottestandems.weebly.com/ and see how much fun you can have.

  • Dear all,

FREE hire of tandems is now available from our bases in Gloucetsershire, Essex and London www.charlottestandems.weebly.com/ or see the Charlotte's Tandems Facebook group.

    Best wishes,

    Alex

  • Hi Rachel, If you Google Go Glide you will find what suits, I Hope this helps.

  • Hi, I got mine from Halfords as they go up to age 6, there is a shop where you can get them for older children to adults. They were more expensive £100 ish. I cant remember the site but I will have a look tonight and let you know. You can also have a look at you tube as there are some clips of ASD children with Balance Bikes.

I just feel it would be a brilliant achievement if my little one would be able to ride a NT bike without stabalisers!! I then have the safety element tho!!!!

  • hiya Alex

thanks for that I will have a look on your website, I would love to give it a try with my son and hopefully his balance will improve

What is your website called please

    rachel

  • Hi, We have bought a Balance Bike for our little one and have seen improvement already, they learn the balance skills to ride a bike before introducing pedals. You can buy them form 2yrs-Adult. They will not have to relearn the process of cycling after taking the stabalisers  off!!!

  • Dear RachMama,

I think that your son would probably be too big for a tag-a-long, so I would suggest a tandem.  We have a number to borrow for a month or so, for free.  If you look on my website, CharlottesTandems, you'll see them and lots of details, including how to contact me directly.  After riding the tandem, your son may get better at balancing and may ride his own bike or may enjoy riding the tandem anyway.

My daughter got used to pedalling a bike (without stabalisers), after riding the tandem, but would not brake or have any idea about road safety, so we've stuck to the tandem, which she loves.

    Good luck.  Alex

  • my son cant yet ride a bike he is 9 any ideas how to help him, his balance is very poor and can be clumsy, has a new bike that he cant be used I have now got some stabalisers now adult ones any tips my son has HFA

  • Dear WelshMum,

If you are going want to ride on the road and your daughter doesn't learn to ride the bike then tag-a-longs are readily available and cheap and would be suitable up to about 8 or 9 year olds.  Beyond that tandems are the way to go and I have a number available to borrow for free.

Best wishes, Alex of Charlotte's Tandems

  • Hi, Any advice would be great. We have just bought a Balance bike for our daughter and hoping it will improve her balance skills before trying the real thing.
