Moved by Music

Hi,

Just posting about a new band I discovered a couple of weeks ago, I usually get obsessed about new music interests. I found there was a gig in the barbican hall in London, and went to that has been a stressful few months, so Today is the only day I have felt relaxed.

My music tastes are varied and can be weired, this band falls in to the wiered category, but it was an amazing performance last night. Ther are called A Winged Victory for the Sullen, style is ambien/neo classical, and have some great clips and videos on youtube:

Not everybody's cup of tea, I know, but posting incase there are a few who like it.

If you fancy seeing them live, theres is a gig in Leicester and one in Salford, just search google.

  • Sorry for not posting sooner, have had some personal problems which have consumed a lot of time. Thanks for all the replies, I was a Bowie fan and sadenned by his loss earlier this year, what a mark he has made in the world.

Thanks for mentioning Mogwai, I checked that out and like what I hear. I also like playing music loud, my main obsessive interest recently has been old hi-fi equipment which was out of my reach in 80s/90s. I managed to get some speakers I have been looking for years, proving to be a difficult journey to get them set up properly and running with the right amplifiers.

Now for something totally different, over the past few weeks I have really got obsessed with the following album:

    kishibashi.bandcamp.com/.../151a

There are links to full length samples on that page.

I didn't like it at first, took a few listening sessions to get in to it, but just cant stop playing it over and over now. has helped me get through a difficult few weeks. Not sure to categorise it, experimental, there are bits which are similar to Yes. My favourite track is "Beat the Bright out of me"

He did a tiny desk concert on you tube, very talented guy:

  • Thank you for posting! Quite beautiful. I like music that connects with my emotions.

This is the latest one I have on repeat:

Mogwai made the soundtrack for the French TV show Les Revenants. Both the soundtrack and the programme are beautiful in my opinion. The band is described by Wikipedia as post-rock - but I'm not actually sure what that means. Also, "The band typically compose lengthy guitar-based instrumental pieces that feature dynamic contrast, melodic bass guitar lines, and heavy use of distortion and effects."

  • Not too bothered about listening to music but sing in a choir. Well two to be precise and sadly they meet on the same day different time of day at least.  I am not too sure if am enying the newer choir but will keep going because I like what we have sung. In both choirs its pop music arranged for choirs.  It like having a brain bath for me that hour.

  • So tonight, it's The Bewlay Brothers, Life on Mars, Suffragette City, The Prettiest Star...

I always felt he understood what was wrong with the world, somehow. I felt he spoke up for me, and the likes of me, when I was 12 and confused and wondering whether it was all worth it.

It was very good to know you David, even though we never met.

  • No I'm the same, I love loud music! I think it's because it's expected noise (I hate sudden loud noises) and it's noise that I control.

I'm with you on quality as well. I find most live recordings tolerable on earphones, but through speakers it's good to be good. Same goes for bit rate on digital music.

  • Talking about music, I wonder if anyone else has a liking for it turned up to 11?  I have big, good quality old fashioned speakers and amp and I sometimes (quite often) turn it up so far that I can feel every bass note through the floor, even when I'm in the kitchen. Atmosphere (Joy Division) is one I love to play really loud.  Plus most tracks on Sandinista (Clash).  It's good at present as I have no neighbours, so nobody to worry about upsetting.

I wonder about this because I've seen it written that peaople with AS often dislike loud noise. I hate even quiet noise if I'm trying to sleep, or if it is not in my control and being made inconsiderately. But loud noise per se, I can very much enjoy.

I only like loud music if the sound quality is very high. Live bands that are badly mixed are not worth listening to but if the sound is good, it can punch right through me and I'll be happy.

  • Really like these! I don't often listen to ambient music, but I can see how this would have been awesome live.

I've recently thought about my attachment to music and while I tend to be fussy, I've yet to find anyone who's fussy in the same way.

It's not about genres for me at all, but about melody and chord progression. I love music in certain keys, particular B, D and C minor and even better if they have particular types of progression. For that reason, I tend not to be terribly fond of noise and heavily technical music (well, music that focuses on technique above all else). However I do have music ranging from chip tune, synth and dream pop/ shoegaze to prog rock, avant garde and melodic death metal.

I've never really been sure why this is and it often means I often can't understand the fuss over songs from my favourite artists that every other fan seems to love (for some reason they seem boring).

  • Wow, I like this. Never heard of A Winged Victory for the Sullen before, but glad you've put me onto them. I love stuff like Eno, Klaus Schulze, Jon Hassel, Philp Glass etc. This is a little like some of some of their stuff, but different and new, so therefore brilliant! Thanks.

  • Yeah when you say about getting obsessed with the sounds emitted I completely agree. I love the whole idea of playing an instrument without a barrier, if that makes sense. What I mean is that when I play guitar I love to just go up and down the diffrent scales, for example today I just spent about an 2 hours of constant expermentring with the Minor Blues Scale. I like to think 'the more you play, the more you learn'.

When people ask me "Do you do yoga or stress relief exersies?" I say "I play guitar, it's mental yoga to me".

Have you ever heard of the musician Jean Michel Jarre? Well if you haven't I think you would like his music, I may be wrong but heres a link to one of his most famous songs... m.youtube.com/watch

  • Hi Bob,

Thanks for replying to my thread, I have dabbled playing keyboards and electric guitar.I haven't made much progress with either as I tend to get facinated and obsessed with the sounds that are produced, so I experiment a lot with those.

My keboard is just a midi controller hooked up to a computer, the compter music scene is very big these days, you can get emulators for "vintage" estoric synthesizers, with additional capabilities. One day I will get a true analog keyboard to play on.

I haven't done either for a while, have had so much to deal with.

  • I like to read other people's opinions on music and its diffrent genres, and your musical intressts sound awesome. I personally like music also and I was looking at the videos you linked, its complety diffrent style to the music I'm used to but I found it quite nice to listien to. When I say I have diffrent style music intressts from you I mean I like anything from calm Blues to heated Rock. I play the guitar and love every bit of it.

If you play any intsruments please point them out because that's also another intresst of mine.
