Autism and ACL injury

My son is 21 and is serverly autistic, non verbal and hurt he's ACL after an accident on the trampoline a year ago and hasn't walked since. He now has a fear of walking again as he has physically fit from the injury so appears it's more of a psychological issue.

Any advice or help would be appreciated, we just need more ideas of things we can do. This may of happened to someone else before us ?

Please help !

  • Maybe you could break it down into tiny little stages.  For example starting off just putting his feet flat on the floor when sitting and thinking about how that feels, then doing that when standing still with support: does it feel strange to him?

What would be good for him about walking, and what would be bad?  Maybe walking would also mean other things would change?

  • We have some professionals involved but we are at a lose end. He has parrelle bars in he living room at home but will only walk along them on tip toes and will not let go. He will not stand with his feet flat on the floor but will do this when sitting a chair or pushing up into a chair or on to hes bed. He is physically able to walk so it's more of a psychological issue of having a fear of walking.

  • Hi, can you give us some more info about your son/your situation so we can reply appropriately?  Otherwise we may end up asking your loads of questions or responding with info you already know or don't need. Smile.  Also, welcome to the site - loads of info so have a good look around if you haven't already.
