There are times when I'm such a numpty

It was years before I worked out that actors wear wigs!, I'd see them in something and then see them on something like the One show and wonder how they'd manages to grow their hair so much and stuff like that.

Theres been so many things like that over the years, mispronunciations, not knowing what some cultural things are, I sort of have to wonder at my own niavity. WHat made it all worse was that some "friends" would either laugh at me or wouldn't tell me I'd made a boo boo so they could laugh behind my back.

Do you ever miss the obvious?

  • I'd never seen skull caps either, I'd always wondered how their hair didn't escape, I don't think it was until drag artists came along that I knew of them.

I remember when dept stores, the posher ones like John Lewis has wig dept's.

The other thing that always trips me up are all the customs around things like weddings and all the fuss, to me a big do would be registry office followed by the pub. All this big dress, rings, writing vows and all the other stuff, just does my head in and having only ever been to three weddings I'm just not familiar with them, I've never been to a Christening either apart from my own and I don't remember that! So many of these customs are totally unfamiliar to me and it can get really embarrassing, espcially at my age.

  • I can really relate to the lying thing, as I feel exactly the same.

It has caused issues in my romantic relationships, as I can't stand lying, regardless of what it's about ... Latterly, I don't think it's the lying as such that gets me, but the inauthenticity. Perhaps the difference is subtle, but I think it's any inauthenticity that upsets me.

Often I can clearly see (and understand) why someone has lied, but I disagree that's the way to handle it, 99% of the time

  • why did it never occur to me that actors routinely wore wigs?

It was while before I worked that out, too. When i was in my fifties, I accidentally saw an actress waiting to start shooting and she was wearing a skullcap. When the wig arrived, she slipped it on. I had no idea what they wore under wigs!

  • My problem with accents is that I pick them up all to easily, if I'm with someone with a pronounced accent, I'll start speaking the same and they think I'm doing it on purpose to make fun of them.

The other thing I have is dyslexic hearing, I hoestly thought for years that highway men said Stand on your Liver, instead of Stand and Deliver. I was convinced that Fat Boy Slim, was singing about the Vauxhall Brothers instead of the Funk Soul Brothers.

The dyslexic hearing I understand and I know everybody mishears things, I had a elderly aunt who used to like to go a cafe and have a toasted beagle (bagel) wth butter than came in a rammadan (ramekin) dish! But some of the other stuff, I'm really shocked at my own ignorance and gullability, why did it never occur to me that actors routinely wore wigs?

  • Should I rename myself The Numpty Woman? lol

  • I once asked why don't they have something like hearing aids for your eyesight JoyJoy

  • I deep down believed that people will not lie unless they have a good reason to.

I still have this problem. I've been conned by sellers, once for £thousands, once a few hundred by a seller I had trusted. I don't seem to learn! But my thinking is, if I lose trust in everyone, I will lose a large part of my humanity. It still hurts, though, that people do such things. When I read the news, I feel very angry when I read of people conned out of money, particularly old and vulnerable people. Or people conned through dating agencies, pretending to be single for example. Like you, I am trying to be ultra careful.

  • I'm terrible with accents. I can recognise most accents under most circumstances, but not when I expect them to be something else. There was one guy I'd been listening to at my trade union conference for a couple of years, but didn't realise he spoke with a Scottish accent because he was a delegate for Manchester. Or listening to a famous Welsh actress in a role on TV and thinking she was appalling at an Irish accent because I'd got the idea her character was Irish.

And yep - I was teased at school for mispronunciations.

  • I do things like this all the time - and you are far from being alone on here, I expect. What horrid friends - fiends really; I would avoid them! True friends wouldn't belittle you like this.

No one knows everything. I'm sure you know a great deal others don't, for example, your keep knowledge of medieval history. And you've learned about AI very quickly. Anyway, better be naive than nasty.

  • I didn't realise for years that Scotty from Star Trek wasn't Scottish, not because I thought he sounded Scottish, just because it just never occurred to me to question it.

  • It's not your fault TheCatWoman, the beauty industry has a lot to answer for! I recently went onto a beauty section of a website to get some advice for a under eye cream. Had a look at some of the tthreads, what you can do/get for your body these days is amazing! Open mouth Eye lash inserts! Eye liner and lip tattoos, eyebrow blading, obviously botox and fillers, new style hair extentions (Nano loops?) for thickness, etc. I've also recenntly watched Surgery Secrets of the Rich and Oliva Attwoods Price of Perfection on modern plastic surgery. You can now even have fat transfers for the back of your hands to make them look younger! I think the worst one though was in an episode of Olive Attwood, it's a bit grim but people were having their legs intentionally broken, rods inserted and everday, 4 times a day they had a an alen key and would wind it round to seperate the bones a bit more to give them extra hight. They did this for three months.

Now, writting all that sounds like I have missed the obvious Joy in that you were using the beauty example as an example, lol but I just wanted to let you know there's a lot more visual beauty trickery out there than we realise! Also, my own example, it was only recenntly I realised George from Rainbow is a boy.

Also, those 'friends' don't deserve your time or attention. Frankly you are well shot of them.

  • I was humoured, a lot, as a boy. But I learned to develop a thicker skin.

  • 1. I just KNEW when I saw the word “numpty” in the title that this is a TheCatWoman thread LOL

    2. When I was in high school I was IMMENSELY naïve. I really don’t want to give details, but let’s just say a handful of people recognized that it was very easy to dupe me, even on things that should be obvious. Reason being, I deep down believed that people will not lie unless they have a good reason to. Boy was I wrong.

    3. Since then, I have learned to be suspicious of everything. Anything I read online I double check it. When people tell me something in person and there is even an inkling that they might have an ulterior motive, I am cautious. Lol I’m so careful that I even look up quick notes on recent movies and shows so that I don’t get taken by surprise when someone references pop culture. I haven’t felt quite so naïve or duped in years because I am so cautious.

    4. That doesn’t mean I don’t make dumb mistakes. That still happens a lot. Thankfully, I surround myself with people who just laugh off my weirdness and we move on. Thus, I can’t even remember recent examples of that.

    5. I mentioned on another recent thread that I have a trauma response to lying. One reason is my mother and another reason is point 2 above. When I KNOW someone lied to me (unless they had a good reason to), that’s an automatic unforgivable sin for me lol. It’s not worth suffering the rising blood pressure, shakes, and feelings of dread again just to save face.

  • Yes, similar things happen to me regularly. And I feel embarrassed usually, once I realise.

At times it is like taking the world too literally, other times distractions, other times missing people's intent or just connecting things differently, and so on.
